1241763 2011-11-04 03:53:00 Since 2 months ago XP SP3 machine has been restarting itself after shutdown. I got it to shutdown but touching the PS/2 mouse would cause it to boot up. What mechanism could do this??? Something has changed but I have no idea what.

Standby and restart modes seem normal.

This computer is quite old but has been functioning OK. The owner is an elderly lady who is still very sharp and switched on. She never does anything apart from the routine stuff. I can't see any changes that look suspicious. ACPI is enabled. S3 set. Event viewer is not helpful. It is not set to restart on error.

There are zillions of posts out there regarding XP shutdown problems but so far I haven't seen anything that matches this.

Any ideas/pointers welcomed.

1241764 2011-11-04 05:08:00 Is it an ASUS? Because some / or most ASUS mobos can turn on with a mouse or kb (the option is in the BIOS), if theyre PS/2 Speedy Gonzales (78)
1241765 2011-11-04 07:11:00 Most mother boards have the option -- In th BIOS, look for the "Wake on / Power on" options.

On Gigabyte boards theres one called power on by mouse -- Under the power management Setup. -- I always disable it along with wake on / Power on by ring.

1241766 2011-11-04 09:06:00 Thing is, this is an old system and I am wondering what has been changed. Certainly, the BIOS hasn't been changed. The power management on XP is pretty rudimentary and I only saw settings for monitor,HDD and standby.

I turned off the enable startup under Device Manager for mouse and NIC. But the earlier settings, I am sure, hadn't been a problem previously so wasn't surprised that it didn't fix the problem.

Could an aging PSU cause the symptoms I wonder? It has to be something that has changed recently.

Don't know what the mobo is - the comp is with the owner ATM.

I will get hold of it early next week and try another PSU and mouse.

Thanks for responses.

1241767 2011-11-04 19:02:00 If the user is elderly she may not go on line.
But if she does, have you checked it for nasties.
Some of those don't like the systems being turned off.

1241768 2011-11-06 19:58:00 She certainly does go online. I will give it a good ol' scanning when I get it. Sure needs to be eliminated, as you say. linw (53)
1241769 2011-11-09 06:19:00 sounds more likely it's not shutting down but going to sleep gary67 (56)
1241770 2011-11-09 06:45:00 No, it is not going to sleep. It goes through the full boot process after being triggered. linw (53)
1241771 2011-11-10 08:35:00 The cigars go to Speedy and Wainuitech. The pwr on by mouse was enabled. Disabling it stopped the restart. Must admit I was not looking at a BIOS setting as I knew the owner had certainly not modded the BIOS! Hard to explain how this seems only to have become a problem recently. Possible for the BIOS to have reset?? Who knows.

Never mind, it was a quick fix thanks to your pointers. And I like quick fixes.

Thanks to all contributors - appreciated.

1241772 2011-11-10 18:49:00 Maybe a mouse ran across the motherboard & reset the bios.
Or maybe the cmos battery is getting tired.
