Having spent a fair amount of time with aspergers and autistic people I'd say the cops are in no position to make a judgment on that level. Nor would I guess are any of our pressf1 experts.

A hard line on thieves is an excellent idea, round em up, send em to court.

More of that please.

Just because you have some form of "minor condition" doesn't mean you can make an appeal because of it to get off.. (Also the reason I wrote Minor Condition, is based on what he's claiming it to affect him to do, not the actual condition itself.)

This is almost as sad as that rich dude who stole the money, and is now saying he can't pay lawyer fees so his case should be thrown out.. About the same level of stupidity in their argument, but wouldn't be surprised if the courts let both cases slide..

1216051 2011-07-13 00:03:00 Your all wrong. He has aspergers, do you even know what that is??? A compulsion he has no control over, like a smoker who is addicted who must sneak a fag, an alcoholic who cannot stop drinking....Do you know what that feels like? but this is not his fault, he was born this way like someone with a degenerative disease. My son has Autism and fair enough if he stole something from a shop but to make an example of him, :bad cops: :bad journos: :bad forum: Gobe1 (6290)
1216052 2011-07-13 00:05:00 Nobody is in the right here, he stole, he did wrong.

The cops, well, were New Zealand cops, they're always wrong.

The journalists were merely reporting the story.

It's New Zealand for you, it really depends on what side of the story you take...

1216056 2011-07-13 00:16:00 Aspergers tends to be a mild condition, they can behave themselves, it just takes some effort on there part.

Go to one of their group activities, they don't all run around loony and acting on their compulsions, they are expected to behave.

There you go again, a true genius. If he does have a condition, and it's that bad that he is "made" to steal from it, he should get help, he shouldn't let society suffer and get stupid cases where he uses his condition as an appeal to get out of punishment for a crime he committed.. There's ways in tact to prevent it for a reason, ignoring help, and getting caught stealing, doesn't mean he can now use his condition as a means to get out of it, when he couldn't be bothered helping himself in the past.

(also just realised I quoted the wrong reply, either way, still )

Aspergers has many scales of severity and his was definitely not mild

The fact the cops went beyond to make and example of a disabled person is what get up my nose the most, and if i didnt have a disabled child i probably wouldn't give a ****
