| 1216190 | 2011-07-13 21:44:00 | what eats me is that shops are still selling TV's with analogue tuners in them, and not freeview. One would think the government would have set a deadline for these old sets to be stopped being sold. How many people that aren't quite up to the technology will be suckered into buying a non digital set because it has HD splashed across it. They're also still seeing DVD recorders with analog tuners in as well. The STB for a TV is OK but if you have to add one to a DVD recorder with all the duel recording options you have to use as well.. like set the record time on the DVD recorder and if your STB can do the same remember to do that as well. I gave up trying to do this all the time and bought a TiVo.. |

| 1216192 | 2011-07-29 06:28:00 | I have Sky (digital) and the old system analogue connected through a LCD TV. I can only record 1 channel at a time through Sky but another channel through analogue. When digital TV comes in then I will only be able to record 1 channel at a time, therefore I want the powers at be to keep the analogue broadcast going so I can record an other channel. Is this fuzzy thinking? |

| 1216194 | 2011-07-29 07:09:00 | I have put together a bit of a FAQ, maybe the mod's will sticky this post? ~~~~~~~ if you are reading this FAQ then you know that NZ is going to a full digital TV system . this means no more "rabbit ears" and "coat hanger" arrangements . Digital TV means better picture, better sound and the government gets to free up the radio frequency's currently being used for TV . the new digital system in NZ is called freeview, with freeview you can get all your normal channels and maybe even a few more . the government people have setup a website with a FAQ, but I feel that this is the place that many geeks will come to first . the official website is : http://www . goingdigital . co . nz/ Q1 . Do I need a new TV . A1 . No . any old TV will work fine when a digital tuner is plugged into it, a lot of tuners even come with a RF output if the TV doesn't have AV inputs . if you want a new TV, that cool, but be sure that it has built in freeview, most do, but not all . But buying a digital decoder that will plug into your TV is probably the cheapest option . Q2 . Do I need to get a digital decoder? A2 . Maybe . . . If you have sky/Telstraclear cable or freeview then you're "digital" already and so don't need to do anything . If you have a TV that is less then two years old then there is a good chance that it has built in freeview . otherwise you need to get a decoder box . Q3 . My TV is a "full HD" TV is that digital ? A3 . HD TV is not related to freeview . the terms of "full HD" and "HD ready" and just marketing for the resolution of the screen . An HD TV, may or may not have built in freeview . Q4 . whats the difference between UHF and satellite for freeview ? A4 . depending on where you are located, you may not get a choice . UHF is more in main centers, it gives an HD picture . satellite is anywhere in NZ, it is NOT HD, but has a few more channels . Q5 . can I use an old Sky Dish ? A5 . more than likely this will be fine and need no changes to dish alignment . Q6 . can I use my current UHF aerial? A6 . yes, it may need to be pointed to another direction, but should work fine . Q7 . when is this change to digital happening? A7 . the new freeview system is running now and has been around for about two years . the old system will switch off at different times depending on which part of NZ your in, the first to switch off the old system will be late 2012 . Q8 . if it's called "freview" than why do I have to pay? A8 . the service is free, the box to receive the signal costs between $100 -> $500 depending on features . |

UHF is more in main centers, it gives an HD picture. satellite is anywhere in NZ, it is NOT HD, but has a few more channels. Wondering why you want to know (seeing as you live in the UK, which apparently has a different concept of Freeview (mpeg2 standard, transmitted via terrestrial signal (UHF?)), whereas Nz has Mpeg4 standard (Full HD/1080i capable) transmitted via UHF for those able to receive it (main cities mostly, because of lots of mountains) and Mpeg2 (standard definition (SD)) via satellite for those who cant You mention a digital tuners in question 1 and digital decoder in Q2 what is the difference ? Is same thing. You only get an HD picture IF it is being broadcast in HD. Very true, and you will only see it in Full HD, if you have the Full HD signal etc. What extra channels do you get on the freeview platform via satellite ? Depends on the area, is rebroadcast from local ground stations. |
