1216020 2011-07-11 08:16:00 Another "sensible sentencing" case no doubt for our resident hardliners, apparently stooping to "tough sentencing" for a person with a mental disability for stealing two light bulbs from an earthquake damaged site, where even the "victim" of the offence doesn't think an offence has occurred.

The Police having completely lost perspective of a case they should have dropped long ago, but now want to take on the TV company for pointing out the obvious too them that they have blown this well out of proportion. Unfortunately the Police have spent too much time listening to Sensible Sentencing and not enough time using common sense.

1216021 2011-07-11 08:32:00 He is pleading not guilty to being in possession of tools for burglary? He had them on him, end of story. No aspergers will stop the fact that this moron from actually being in possession of these tools The Error Guy (14052)

How many tools does it take to unscrew a lightbulb?

1216023 2011-07-11 08:46:00 The cops have got it right, arrest all thieves and send them before a court, the court can then decide what happens next.

Prefect, what you have described is theft from a place of work, Your justification is no different then the crap that other thieves come up with. If you done that on one of my sites you would be ejected on your ear and blacklisted.

Surely the spoils of demolition become the property of the demolition firm?

.

I don't have any argument with the Courts deciding, although the Police have some latitude to deal with minor offending either at the scene or after a chat at the station. Typically with young people they use that facility, otherwise they'd overflow the cells every weekend and the Courts every Monday morning.

People were warned that there would be zero tolerance for looters in CHCH, much the same as there is zero tolerance for speeds over5kph over the speed limit during public holidays.

1216027 2011-07-11 10:16:00 Given the situation, disability or not, you do crime you can't expect to get a reward now can you.
I think the media once again are just out to criminalize police. Once again.

1216028 2011-07-11 11:04:00 I am with 12v on this one, common sense must prevail, to take a piece of junk from a site can't be called a crime, as apposed sat to some copper pipe. Cicero (40)

Depends on the terms of the contract, generally yes but the usual practice is to take the value of the salvage off the cost of the job when you do the quote.

No idea what the terms are in ChCh, at a guess I say its either zero salvage or just get the easy pickings and crush em.
