1215315 2011-07-07 07:33:00 Video is far and away the superior format.

I couldn't agree more, but it really depends on the context.

EG a guitar video lesson - good. A recipe video - not so good.

1215317 2011-07-07 09:21:00 it really depends on the context .

EG a guitar video lesson - good . A recipe video - not so good . That really sums it up .

There are some things where a video would be more benefit over written words, and other times a video would be a complete waste of time .

At least with written words on paper or a document on a PC things can be added, notes etc, try doing that with a video unless you went through the whole process of editing it .

Take a car or some other large machine manual - who the hell is going to make a many hour video on every little aspect of the spec's .

An example would be some of the machines Metla uses, some mechanic, having to look up a spec on some part, or part number, looking through possible hours of video -- Well we all know that wouldn't happen . Sure they may have all the parts listed on computers, but thats text, not a video .

As for cooking - text would be better, unless the person has all the ingredients at their finger tips -- Oh wait, don't have this or that its in the pantry - pause video, rewind, start again --- Yeah right .

1215318 2011-07-07 10:25:00 or you could just watch that 10 second part of the video where they list the ingredients and then get them together, then you marvel how fantastic it is that you can watch how the ingredients are combined and the techniques as used by the chef, and be presented with a real representation of how your dish should look.

Later as you digest that fantastic dish and enjoy a glass of wine you can marvel at the old days when all anyone had was some text on a page.

Having said that, Mrs Metla prints recipes off the net quite often:D

1215319 2011-07-07 11:08:00 SWMBO also prints off recipes all the time -- all of a sudden the printer starts up, ( wasn't me) I have a quick look :drool - she comes in and grabs it, crash bang -- "oh f**k" from the kitchen --- Dinners ready - But what a disappointment - not what shes printed off. :crying

Bit like expecting Wine and you get water ;)

1215321 2011-07-07 13:07:00 Video might be good in some cases but it's not really useful for most things, the main problem is that you have to have something to play it on.

Paper works without power, you can throw it against the wall and it will still work, it costs one hell of a lot less than an iPad.

And for the morons who want to say paper wastes trees ...

Well, as long as we aren't destroying rainforests to get the wood... which one is better - trees in a sustainable forest that grow back quickly or multiple mined metals and other materials that don't?

Also, paper simply rots when you throw it away, an iPad doesn't.

1215322 2011-07-07 19:40:00 But if we let literacy degrade to the point where we rely on video we'd then need stupid things like another video where we voice out the index to all the videos on the iPad, coz a written index to all those videos would be useless.

Imagine the inefficiency of having to sit through dozens of videos just coz you can't remember how much flower to use when making scones.

or this: The recipe calls for 3 tablespoons, but my measuring spoons are marked as tbls. Does anyone have a tablespoon?

I entered:

xxxx recipe -youtube -video

Still brings up quite a few video only.

I do not have anything against tech as such. But I do have a budget. Tablets and ipads and so on just so I can follow a recipe would be stupid and wasteful, especially when I have other things I need to be saving for.

That's not my point anyway. Video is fine and a good idea when you want the technique - bread kneading for instance - but a quick list of ingredients? Nah, a scrap of paper does just fine.

Food, liquids and electronics don't mix either. My clearfile with my scraps of paper in it gets a bit messy sometimes when cooking, but a wipe with a cloth fixes it. Wiping down my ipad after it's been smeared with food probably wouldn't work too well.

We don't have to all have the latest toys all the time.

1215324 2011-07-07 22:13:00 Why has nobody mentioned the greatest advantages of an iPad over a paper-based recipe? Paper is virtually useless for straightening up a fridge after an earthquake, it is just too thin, whereas your "just works" iPad can be wedged under an appliance and make a useful contribution to getting back on the level. Every kitchen should ideally have a collection of iStuff as part of the emergency kit.
After a few after shocks and the associated levelling, just imagine the kudos when at an Apple rally you say "I cook for a family on three iPhones".
