1216262 2011-07-12 05:28:00 There's a SPAM email going around.

So what I hear you say – welcome to 2011. This one's a little bit different because it's asking people to call an international number which, if rung, will be charged at a premium rate per minute.

The spam email reads:

From: "Inland Revenue" Notice
You have received this email because you or someone had used your account from different locations. Please call to confirm your billing address from your LANDLINE at this number: 00881835211737
Regards,
Stephen Bronner
Internal Revenue Service

If the number is dialled, an automated message asks the caller to hold. For each minute the caller holds, charges will be incurred to the caller.

Advise anyone who gets the email to delete it immediately

(I'm sure no-one who frequents this forum will be suckered into calling the IRD on an obviously non-NZ number, but you might have friends or rellies who could get taken in...)

1216263 2011-07-12 05:54:00 00 881 is an Iridium Service followed by a cellphone number. I count nine digits in the cellphone number. I am not sure what an Iridium Service is but I got this information from the International Country and Area Codes in the phone book. Bobh (5192)

008818 takes me to Global Star (Mobile Satelite Service). Hard to tell which country the number comes from.

1216266 2011-07-12 07:20:00 As it's a satellite phone it's not tied to a specific country. Satellite phone calls are VERY expensive!

1216267 2011-07-12 07:52:00 I'm surprised you bothered to read it. I have deleted numerous of these based on the subject matter. IRD does not have my email address so it was obvious spam. user (1404)
1216268 2011-07-12 08:11:00 Had I received it, it would have gone straight into the Deleted folder. I am just passing the message along for the edification of the perpetually bemused...

1216269 2011-07-13 00:34:00 Thanks for the update :p

Glad to know that I won't fall into being windled out of my $$$ (Although if the "IRD" did contact me, which I doubt they would, I would delete it, based on the messed up number on the end.)

1216270 2011-07-13 00:38:00 :thumbs:Deletion is the simplest remedy to these type of emails. Bobh (5192)
1216271 2011-07-13 02:01:00 The IRD are too useless to email you anyway :p

That and it says "Internal revenue" at the bottom, but "Inland revenue" in the subject. Which is it?! :p
