1215516 2011-07-07 23:06:00 . . . . and she came over riding her horse to visit my wife .

They were sitting at the kitchen table having a piece of carrot cake and some coffee and I noticed as I walked by, that here arms had lots of scratches and small scabs on them .

I asked her if she'd been giving her cat suppositories again (don't ask) and she said: "No, it's those damned chickens" .

Curiosity flag at full mast, I hadda know what she's doing to the chickens to tear her arms up like that .

"Oh, when their scales on their legs stand out, I use some pliers to take them off for them - you know . It's that time for their scales to molt . They raise quite a fuss and that's how I get all scratched" .

Now - any intelligent person (NOT referring to the past suppositories-and-the-cat notice above) KNOWS that chickens DON'T molt their leg scales . When they stand up or out, that's from mites living under their scales and the correct thing to do is just oil their legs and that smothers the mites and the scales go back to the condition they were in a few days .

I always put a pan of mineral spirits (paint thinner for oil paints) mixed with some transmission fluid in a flat pan outside the coop where they have to at least step in it one time during the day, and that kills the mites for my birds .

I also wipe the roosts down with Vaseline once a month or so - since that's where the mites live during the day if they aren't riding on the legs of a chicken,

But she'd rather yank (the verb, not the noun) their scales off .

I wouldn't want to be her when the chickens get together one night and sneak into the house and peck her eyes out .

1215523 2011-07-08 01:02:00 Oh - I did that alright! I could tell you about the cat and the suppositories - but it might be kinda gruesome.

She does things her own way since her last husband died - but I bet his scales got ripped off too.

Actually she's been widowed three times. Her first two husbands died from eating poisoned mushrooms - imagine that! What a co-inky-dink - huh?

Her third husband died from a concussion ----

----because he wouldn't eat the poison mushrooms.
