1244089 2011-11-17 22:15:00 my computer stopped working a few days after a lightning storm, took it to the shop and guy said it was fried but the hard drive was still in one piece but could go at any time. got him to get all my files off and put on external drive...all good so far.

my question is, i was using thunderbird and wanted to get my emails off the hard drive as well... hes says i cannot do this because they will not reconstruct? i thought all we would have to do is copy the mbox files from the drive and then import them back into the mail client.

or am i way off the mark

thanks

1244090 2011-11-17 23:06:00 You should be able to unless the hard drive has died gary67 (56)

1244093 2011-11-17 23:40:00 Can you connect the hard drive to a working computer and then just look for the folders with what you need.

If you only have a laptop then you will have to get either a docking station or a external case so you can plug it into a USB port. If you have a working desktop take the side off and connect the hard drive that way

1244094 2011-11-18 00:02:00 ill have to get the hard drive back from the computer guy to give it a go, any ideas why he said they wont reconstruct? floyds (3095)
1244095 2011-11-18 00:23:00 It's probably that you need to boot off the drive and run thunderbird in order to easily export or backup the messages and recovering them from the hard drive directly is a bit more difficult.
No doubt he was meaning you can't just simply copy them from one machine to another.

The link PCtek provided should be worth a try, although it seems to assume a backup from my quick skim through.

How fried is fried? direct lightning would have destroyed the machine Imediately. It was probably a power surge on the mains, which the hard drive may well survive (although if it took out the PSU it could end up killing anything and everything). A tech obviously has to play it safe, but if the drive hasn't failed yet it is entirely possible it is undamaged. I would like to know what components were damaged if it was me, so that I could decide if it was worth attempting a repair.

1244096 2011-11-18 00:33:00 Can you not just copy the mbox like you can with Outlook then? I just copy my .pst file and take it to whichever computer I'm moving to gary67 (56)
1244097 2011-11-18 01:45:00 If the drive is readable, which I guess it is as other files were copied, just copy the TB profile. This can then be moved to a new installation. Google move thunderbird to new computer. linw (53)
1244098 2011-11-18 01:46:00 Profiles contain it - like pst in Outlook. pctek (84)
