President Barack Obama warned that Social Security checks and payments to veterans might be at risk if a deal is not made on the debt ceiling. I cannot guarantee that those checks go out on Aug. 3 if we havent resolved this issue, because there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it, he told CBS News. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has warned that the United States might default on its obligations if the debt ceiling is not raised by Aug. 2 Fox News reports that while the government is obligated to make Social Security payments, a report from the Congressional Research Service found that they could be delayed if the Treasury Department deems it necessary. Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) said that he was doubtful that the payments would be stopped. The Treasury secretary is going to have options in terms of who should be paid and who shouldnt, he told Fox News. Yes, there are some debts that have to be rolled over. But theres going to be money available on Aug. 3, and I think its way too early to be making some types of veiled threats like that. His true colors are really showing now. |

I get the impression the the Republicans don't give a toss about the poor in the US only their rich voting buddies so not writing any more Social Security checks would pleaze them immensely. More tax refunds for the rich and in the US it is the rich that get them.. |

Wealth distribution in the United States has been getting worse for decades regardless of whom ever is in power. |

No - NBC/CBS/PBS - which all were puppets of the Democratic Party are now turning their back on the White House and the anger they are expressing is not even as nasty as Fox ever was. Even Rush Limbaugh is flummoxed at the recent shake-up and fallout from the ranks of staunch liberals and tax-and-spend socialists. The problem is that the rich and the industrialists already pay over 85% of the taxes that the country runs on. Poor people don't pay taxes - not directly. They DO pay gas and utility taxes, vehicle registrations taxes and hidden consumer taxes and more that they are not equipped to pay from their low wages. These people are the ones getting newly taxed every day in the form of food and fuel costs and the secret trickle-down charges and fees from the local and state governments wanting their share of the pie too. The last great exodus of the manufacturing corporations out of the US was from excessive tax bases on their products and union labor that drove the cost of doing business in the US out of sight - and that is now not been going to change for the better - again. Obama has 'closed some nasty tax loopholes' that kept the companies here now. With some of them that had started returning from China or Taiwan and Indonesia now - that trend will stop right in it's tracks and a new off-shore flight will start anew. People with big money who are philanthropic have lost their incentives to give to worthy organizations and that well has gone dry. PBS is scrambling all the time now to woo funds and attract members to it's dwindling list of supporters. There is no government subsidy for any PBS station, and they don't run commercials to pay the bills. Fees on the little guy are basically untapped according to the talking heads who know where the money will have to ultimately come from. Consumer taxes are a new untapped venue for the states and local govts now. Social Security Retirement income is taxable, although Social Security Disability isn't. The guys coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan now are only getting medical and social benefits/assistance for 120 days, whereas the old guys like me get VA benefits until we die. That's only fair, especially for someone like me who got Agent Orange'd in VietNam and the gvt lied about it even being there. No - Obama is just playing the cards he dealt though, as he is just a figurehead for the Democrats in Congress who for some arcane reason want to destroy the low and middle class people and bleed big corporations more than they already do. |

He came into a screwed up government, and because he's trying to fix it, people are hating him for it. Same deal here. I imagine that's why labour is trying to introduce the capital gains tax. Because the rich have stayed (at least relatively, if not gained wealth) rich, and the middle/lower class are now basically screwed. |

These are the same guys trained to vaporize whole villages in guerrilla warfare, know how to fire large caliber weapons and secure a whole city block with four Claymore mines and some duct tape. |

Our government didnt fully pay for the trip for our veterans to return to Crete, while our overweight defence minister who has never been in the forces stayed in a plush hotel in Crete. | prefect (6291) | ||
| 1216926 | 2011-07-15 02:52:00 | SJ, one cannot just keep printing money !, look at Germany before the 2nd world war, a barrow load to pay for a loaf of bread, unless you were Jewish then it was gold. Mind you the pig sti (Portugal, Ireland, Greece - Spain, Turkey and Italy) are in dire straights as well. New Zealand ! we are about to sell off the family silver. Your USA The Trumpet knows where we are headed, right up the proverbial. Lurking. |

| 1216927 | 2011-07-15 04:06:00 | Frankly, these are intelligent men making really stupid decisions - almost like they are blind to the chaos and suffering they are causing . Their hands move as if controlled by a puppet master and their mouths speak as by a ventriloquist hidden under their podiums . I cannot think of any religious 'institution' that denies the inevitable collapse of the financial situation and the world banks and the 'quart of wheat for a day's wages' that is rapidly coming upon us all - Upsidedowners too . The non religious realists are finally coming around to see and say that if something's NOT wrong, there is at least a lot of smoke rising from somewhere . Sadly, many others are in total denial and they honestly believe that there is a fix in the air and things will get better if they can just get the right guy into power . That has been tried by every civilization to date and yet non of them are still standing, nor have any real problems been solved . Others are in survival mode and are stockpiling foods and ammunition and moving to places as far away from the cities as they can get themselves and their families . This is NOT just a few people - great numbers of people who saw Mad Max and A Boy & His Dog are recalling the strategies and needs to survive what they see as a world-wide was of the trench dwellers verses the tower residents . Police departments are training for civil war, if not civil unrest, and the older cops aren't enthralled with the commands that they will have to carry out when they are ordered to shoot their friends, neighbors and families when they only want food and shelter . The 'young-turk' cops will follow orders and there is likely to also be a bloodbath in the ranks of the civil authorities . That's OK with the military though - as there's fewer rogue cops to ultimately have to shoot to bring total martial law . Ask yourself: Are you happy right now living the way you are and under the government that controls your life? I'm not . The system of things is broken and with gold today hitting an all time high at $1583 . 42 USD, this doesn't bode well for people holding paper or promissory notes . Retirement funds are all but depleted here in the US, as even the rich and affluent people who had , IRAs ( . thinkquest . org/3298/doc/retira . html" target="_blank">library . thinkquest . org) and Keogh Plan ( . thinkquest . org/3298/doc/retkeogh . html" target="_blank">library . thinkquest . org) have been living on them until things blew over . The only things that blew over, were their savings and their futures . Now the richest dot-coms are at it again, and yet the housing defaults and walk-aways even in their areas are at an all time high and the US banks said they will be late on their default numbers until the last quarter of this year and they may not even report them until the first quarter of next year to not scare the investors . Panics are a little too early to handle right now, and posting the losses will not add to the security of the small investors and individual account-holders . If they wait until everyone is really hungry and out on the street, well the fight may be outta them by then and as sheep (NZ= pets) they will be easier to slaughter with promises and grand wizardry . But to the naysayers: pay no attention to the man behind the curtain . |
