1217705 2011-07-19 22:18:00 The expensive ipad is actually the same price or a bit cheaper then any of the DECENT android based devices . So this shouldn't really be a apple bashing thread . I started the thread simply because of the ipad being promoted as the "must have" .

I'm not against having devices in schools, its a good idea, just dont agree it "HAS" to be a ipad .

I can assume that like myself everyone has been to the schools web site, read through all the available information and FAQ's etc

IF you had you would clearly see they are pushing and promoting the Ipad2 as the device that they want the students to have . Everything else is second best .

Some of the reasons they give for having the ipad are a load of crap .
Example ipad2's "No known hardware issues" --- oh really?? seen at least 6 Ipads fail with hardware faults in the last year . Show me any electronic device that wont fail at some point- there isn't one .

I know lots of business people and students who have ipads, and just about all of them when asked, or they have commented, the ipads are Ok for doing basic stuff, or playing, but to do serious work that is productive, you need a real computer with a real keyboard, that could be a MAC, Windows or linux based, PC or laptop .

On their site, when asked about about security, theft etc:
(in bold is the question)
"What about security? My son or daughter will break their iPad 2, drop it, lose it – someone will steal it – it's
going to cost me a fortune . " We would hope most people would look after their expensive electronic equipment like they do with their phones .
They look after it and they keep it safe . Part of learning in life .

In other words tough luck !

1217706 2011-07-19 22:23:00 The school will be able to power the buildings from solar panels modified to capture the radiated apple smugness, thereby offsetting the cost of therapy for the staff after their heads are removed from the current rather dark location. R2x1 (4628)
1217707 2011-07-19 22:24:00 this is the biggest case of fanboyism out there GameJunkie (72)

What teachers ?? There wont be many shortly. Why need them, as every thing will be laid out Via the schools servers, the students simply log in and do their work.

Its happening now -(has been for ages) The place I went to when getting some quals was like that - it was lucky if you ever saw a tutor all day.

So more teachers will be unemployed, surplus to requirement.

1217710 2011-07-19 22:33:00 ^^^^

Just adding to my post above #32 - one particular Computer company will do very well out of the apple sales, since they are be promoted as the preferred supplier.

1217711 2011-07-19 22:55:00 I am a most wholehearted supporter of bringing tech into a classroom however there are places where I most definately do not use it because it is more beneficial to actually use paper.

That includes Physics and maths. English is the only subject I really use my laptop however at the end of the year I stop using it since the exams are all hand written, I need to make sure I can still write rather than type

1217712 2011-07-19 22:58:00 When I was at High School we used to purchase our text books at the beginning of the year then sell them back to the school at the end of the year. The same could be done for computing devices. The biggest problem is that computers quickly become outdated as technology advances. Books had a longer lifespan (apart from wear and tear) and took longer to become outdated. Bobh (5192)
1217713 2011-07-19 23:15:00 A generic tablet running Android or a netbook purchased in bulk by the school and passed on for half of cost would have been the perfect option.

We just purchased 10 Acer (I know) netbooks for the primary school. Currently we have about 2-8 computers in one room. No-one's learning is affected, no-one's complaining either. They're only dual-core atoms that cost about $30,000 in total (40 computers, monitors and desktops).
