Security guard stole $42,000
14 December 2007

A Rotorua woman, responsible for filling ATM’s with cash, has been convicted of stealing money from them.

During a four month period, 36 year-old Ariai Mihaka, who was employed by ADT Security, stole a total of $42,880 from inside the back of the security vehicle, unbeknown to her colleague who was driving the van.

Mihaka was sentenced to nine months' home detention and 200 hours community work.

1216973 2011-07-15 07:58:00 What? They charge you a cash handling fee? Think I'd be shopping around for a bank that doesn't rip people off!

Yeah you should be able to get one that charges a flat fee (like $5 per month) for as many manual transactions as you like.

That depends on what plan you're on. I have an internet saver account with westpac, pay no monthly fees but if im feeling like I want to revisit a pre internet era it cost me $3 to make a manual deposit.

I thought all banks in NZ charge 'cash handling' fees?

Remember I had a heated argument with the ANZ bank about this matter when I first arrived in NZ 20+ years ago. LOL

Which bank doesn't charge this? curious to know.

Many banks (including ASB) do offer accounts that have a number (or unlimited) transactions included in the base fee.

1216978 2011-07-15 11:47:00 I bank with westpac - the only Actual Fee I get every month (apart from the overdraft) is a Clearance Fee and thats around $4-$5 .

No actual "Cash Handling Fee" as such listed, I can go to the bank anywhere from daily, to once/twice a week to make deposits .

A lot of banks have accounts\plans which charge no fees for electronic transactions, so provided you never deposit or withdraw actual cash and only use their ATMs you will never pay any fees.

1216980 2011-07-15 12:22:00 A kind word for the ASB:

When I opened my Kiwisaver account they completely failed to make my deductions. After some negotiations it was agreed that I would bulk deposit my contribution and they would pay up my lost earnings.

I made my deposit but their end of the bargain didn't happen, and by the time I found out I no longer qualified for the government top-up for that period.

After further negotiations and submission of proof of deposit, they undertook to reimburse me for all of the money that I had lost, which was a few thousand dollars. The Bank Manager changed during all of this but both he and his replacement treated me with appropriate respect etc. It did help that I had been a customer for quite as long as I had, my ASB account was started with a one Guinea deposit ($2.10 in today's money) after an old family friend made that my christening gift. So I had been a customer virtually all of my life, at that stage well over 55 years.

No help for Pctek there, but viewing the films should sort it out, mistakes do happen. Personally I'd only ever bank over the counter though, there is too much risk in self service and if the machine was outside and was broken into or the collectors held up, you might well be stuffed for lack of proof, even though their computer should hold the deposit data.

Cheers
