Not too sure whether parents should have this as a compulsory stationary item really. Why can't the school provide something - they have computers. If it catches on kids all over the place will have nasty second hand things, fights over who has what item, thefts of items - all the usual nastiness kids do. So does a fancy cellphone count? They have those already.......... |

| 1217685 | 2011-07-19 10:26:00 | From that same schools perspective: 1: It is not practical to type on as far as note taking goes "The students will have to adapt" 2: It cannot really be used to develop any mainstream computer applications (HTML/C+/# etc as far as I know an iPad cant even support writing in its own language or the apple language "We have MacBooks and iMacs for that sort of thing" 3: Its closed source meaning apps must be approved by apple and that costs/requires a dev acct. No motivation for students to write their own code "We have MacBooks and iMacs for that sort of thing" 4: It offers no real advantage over a standard computer or Tablet offered by other vendors. Why brand specific "We are a school which uses overpriced and inefficient computers because we want to rub in everyones faces that we are decile 9" 5: It is likely to get lost or stolen "The parents have enough money to pay for one, why not two?" 7: As likely as it is to get lost or stolen, it will get broken "See above" 8: Apps will be a distraction. There is no real way to parental lock an iPad *loosens collar* "We have MacBooks and iMacs for that sort of thing" |

| 1217688 | 2011-07-19 11:02:00 | The Principal was interviewed on Close Up or Campbell Live (forget which) and she said the only reason for preferencing an iPad is because it has a longer battery life than other devices and would make it through a school day without needing a spare battery or plugging in to charge. | catspyjamas (15614) | ||
| 1217689 | 2011-07-19 11:03:00 | Absolutely ridiculous making kids have such expensive "stationery" like ipads etc.! Parents have enough expenses now! Anybody remember having a slate and chalk? LL |

| 1217690 | 2011-07-19 11:14:00 | Theft and accident will inevitably deprive a significant number of students of their work, to their great detriment. Back-up schmackup, in many cases it won't happen, so unless the school keeps everything synced on their servers as well, come exam time it is down the gurgler. Then of course, having lost the ability to write, how are they going to sit exams anyway? Is the school going to provide squeaky clean iPads for every student at the exam, and what if the instrument of choice was not an iPad, what then? Pre-exam classes on the quirks and foibles of other platforms? They've all gone stark raving mad. Cheers Billy 8-{) :badpc: |

I have a ThinkPad I use for developing. NO battery whatsoever, therefore 5 minutes before class ends I hibernate it. No problems whatsoever. |

| 1217692 | 2011-07-19 11:30:00 | Absolute rubbish... iPads are a big distraction in class. How are students going to sit just a usual English class? They will be just playing away on their iPad. Technology in schools is a bad idea (when every student has their own). :pf1mobmini: |

| 1217693 | 2011-07-19 11:34:00 | I'm sorry, but I'm with the school on this one. I work as an IT tech in a local high school (decile 10) and 1 to 1 laptops can't come soon enough for us. We are looking at making a similar move to Orewa in 2012 or 2013. We imagine that we will have over 3000 student-owned devices on the network at any one time - a laptop, smartphone/PMP and some will have a tablet as well (1500 students). It'll free up some of the limited capital the school has, plus enable techs to focus less on the maintenance of student computers. The hardware is not owned nor supported by the school - rather, the students or the parents. This results in less cost on the school to repair/upgrade damaged or outdated hardware because the hardware is no longer owned by the school. The onus is then on the student and/or their parents to take care of the hardware and maintain it themselves. The school techs will not touch it. In the next 2-5 years 1-1 will be commonplace in all high schools and maybe even in primary and intermediate too. Orewa are just the first cab off the rank - well, not even the first. I know of at least one high school that has gone 1-1 and they haven't looked back. We currently have a wireless for students - there are over 250 devices on this by 10am every day - we know this because the DHCP scope is full... I would say we have 400+ devices trying to connect daily. One more thing - the school said didn't have to be an iPad, but any kind of portable device. |
