1217157 2011-07-16 11:39:00 If MP3s are outlawed, only outlaws will have MP3s.

I love how the cables are worded and phrased, in a love/hate sort of way.

Nowadays I just stream most of my music off of youtube (from official channels) or via podcast radioshows. Partly because of my rather specific tastes, though.

1217159 2011-07-16 22:28:00 Another good example of our corrupted politicians. Is this the type of DEMOCRACY we want? LABOUR = NATIONAL = ALL POLITICIANS

In short, whoever we vote for in the coming election makes no difference.

1217160 2011-07-17 00:15:00 The solution to all of this is very simple but - and it's a big but - it requires intelligence. Simply stop buying the media cartel's products i.e. CDs and DVDs, movies in theaters, music downloads. Nothing more is needed.
I imagine the music/movie/tv companies will be very pissed off when they find their sales are still dropping, (and has probably already caused exactly that), because they've pissed off their customers by going to war against them.

You could also look on the bright side, the internet may speed up some without all the torrent traffic :)

People are willing to pay 100+ for an internet connection. Do you think people, who care for warez, won't just pay an extra 20$ a month use a (US/EU based) VPN service?
You can't stop anyone from doing anything.

Usage won't go down all that much, if at all.

Winnie the Peters for PM, only way to go.

1217163 2011-07-22 00:06:00 Some context around falling music industry sales:
www.guardian.co.uk

Funny how they blame everything external to themselves when the problem lies within. They need to take a long hard look at their pricing strategies. Consumers have been ripped off for too long with the price of music and this is consumers fighting back in the only way they know how (i.e. by not buying or stealing).

Then along comes iTunes who break their product down even further where you no longer need to buy an album of crapola to get the song you like. Instead you can pay for just the good song. That smells like a broken business model to me.

Furthermore, when you watch the latest music videos they all look the same (as I do at the office  ). Young women prancing about in their undies, singing through an auto-tune, with a bunch of odd-balls performing synchronised dry humping in the background. Where is the originality? Where is the talent? The music industry has some deep deep issues they need to resolve before they can reverse the trend of falling sales.

Some of the current crop of Kiwi artists breaking through have genuine talent. I hope they don't adopt the American model of music videos and song-writing.

1217164 2011-07-22 00:19:00 Lets also not forget the BS with the film industry that has some films releasing months after their initial releases (in the states etc)...

Would you wait 3-4 months to watch a movie when it's already out on the interwebs?
They have to synchronize world wide theaters releases to a at least the same month.
Cato (6936)
1217165 2011-07-22 00:41:00 True. They have carefully managed the distribution channels and the timing of the release within that channel for years : theatre release, pay TV, DVD/video, free to air and then retail outlets. Each step was designed to maximise revenues and followed a very specific timeline.

But along came the internet & high speed broadband and consumer expectations have changed. They are another industry (like music & media) that is faced with a changing world. These industries need to either evolve or die slowly. I find it a somewhat ironic that these industries that fed and hyped consumer expectations now can't deliver their content quickly enough to satisfy the next generation of consumers. Oh dear, how to close Pandora's box?
