1243859 2011-11-16 19:44:00 Hi Team

I seem to recall that the Adblock install and configuration on my old computer automatically blocked all ads, and I had a pretty much ad-free existence.

On the new computer, everytime I go back to a site and a new ad has been loaded, I have to mouse over it, select 'block' then 'add filter'. It is especially a nuisance on those sites that rotate ads every few minutes, because it means I have to go back and block the latest arrival every time it pops up a new one.

Is there a setting in Adblock that natively stops all ads and pop-ups in their tracks?

Cheers

1243860 2011-11-16 20:04:00 What are you using? FF or IE?? If FF, did you add a list after you installed it? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1243861 2011-11-16 22:06:00 Billy, there is a way of stopping ads by using what I think they call 'wildcard' filters in Adblock. Instead of just blocking ads one by one (which is perhaps what you are doing), you can block a whole group of ads by using *ads* as a filter. Other versions are things like
*adserver*
*imrworldwide*
*adbureau*
*google-analytics*
*ad.doubleclick*
Wildcard filters like these block any ads that have those words in the url. I guess it is also possible that you have accidentally turned off adblocking?

Instead of just mousing over and selecting block and add filter, look at the url and see if you can shorten it down in such a way as to block any ads that come from that source. Obviously going *tvnz* or *stuff* will block everything from those sites - you have to choose the critical ad-related part of the url and just block that by putting an * at either end of the critical words as above.

1243862 2011-11-16 23:07:00 You install Adblock and for the basic it takes care of it, you choose a subscription. Most have the usual in them. pctek (84)
1243863 2011-11-17 00:58:00 I'm using FF Speedy, and I know nothing of lists . I don't really have the time to explore the depths of these add-ons.

I like the wildcard idea though! As a child of DOS, and having to maintain that knowledge for my archaic instrument programs, I'm still a frequent user. It also helps a lot with Google searches and refining favourites on Trade Me too, though it seems those sites don't stick very closely to DOS rules.

Billy, just click and hold down on the icon Adblock on the toolbar of FF, choose Preferences, choose Filters from the Preferences window, then Add filter subscription. Choose the filter subscription you want (there is only one showing for me), and you are done.

OK, after a couple of false starts (just me being dense) I did all that and I now wait with bated breath to see if anything sneaks through. I ran a quick check on a few sites etc and the only ad was a small one on Google so here's hoping.

Looking good, and I'll confirm outcomes later.

1243866 2011-11-22 07:15:00 It is also good to update the subscription every now and then so that more advertisement groups / categories can be filtered.

AdBlock Plus Preferences > Update all subscriptions

1243867 2011-11-23 10:32:00 Added it to my Son's computer and he is rapt, he has had wall-to-wall ads for years because he was much too smart to listen to me.

I mean, like, what would I know?

Only how to tap the combined experience and computer savvy of the members of Press F1.

That's all.

I've noticed that he can make cock-ups several times faster than I can as well.

That is youth and education for you. :D

Cheers
