1245404 2011-11-25 08:58:00 Anybody have any experance with setting up a monitor in a retail enviroment. Lookng at running some sort of slide show hoping to be able to get away with 24" monitor with a USB input and a flash drive, not wanting to leave a laptop. TIA Wayne WayneMiddy (14028)
1245405 2011-11-25 09:10:00 A lot will depend if the Monitor can play directly from a Flash Drive.

What Does work very well is the WD live TV product here (www.wdc.com) Set several of those up to a monitor/TV, simply plug it in, attach your USB drive, scroll through the menus to play and away you go.

Its small as well, so no big bulky laptops or desktops.

1245407 2011-11-25 20:50:00 When the raspberrypi project goes into manufacture (http://www.raspberrypi.org/) i'll be certainly incorperating them into functions like this, mostly because they are cheap and tiny but best of all, powerful enough to do some relatively decent tasks such as playback 1080p HD video. I might try embedding one into a TV and see if people would buy it for presentation use. They are good because they run linux so you and RDP, SSH, VPN or what ever to them so you have full remote control as well.

Unfortunately they probably wont be available until January

1245408 2011-11-27 22:20:00 Have you thought about building a box to put it in?

In the past I've helped make several MDF 'display boxes' that had a screen mounted at the front, speakers in the sides (or rear) and a couple of 12v fans to pass air through. Once painted black and logo attached, they looked great.

If you wanted to be really fancy you could do the same with perspex, or light aluminum.

The box then allows you to securely house the screen and a DVD player, PC, Console, WDTV, whatever really.

Find a laptop with a damaged screen and use that then you can access it over wireless to update content, etc. It's not too hard to 'extend' wires on power buttons to put them on the back/outside of the box either.
