| 1245345 | 2011-11-24 21:03:00 | Just wondering if somebody has some experience with the warranty conditions of hard disks? My computer has a 250GB Seagate hard disk that failed after 18 months. On the Seagate website the warranty check for this particular drive states: 3 years, so it is sort of covered. But what does it really means? I sent the drive in, expecting to have it repaired or replaced. But they only credited me $43 as the drive is not replaceable because of flooding in Thailand. If I buy the same drive again the price I would have to pay is $137. Is that what you get for a 3 year warranty? |

The floods were caused by a act of nature - which is not covered under any warranty . They are fully within their rights to give a refund if they cant supply the products . Sure they can send the drive back to seagate, but it may take six months or more (currently) before a replacement is sent . So the option should have been - contact the person and advise either a refund or wait till a replacement comes . I sent a drive back to seagate once because the supplier didn't have any, and it took about two months for a replacement, and that was when there were no problems due to flooding etc - even then it clearly stated on the drive it was repaired, and look where it came from -- Location is currently under water . See attached picture . |

You would only have to send it back to them if the retailer ceased to exist or something. Otherwise you take it back to the retailer and get a replacement. |

If you were to buy a replacement OF THE SAME AGE & SPEC, I would say it would cost maybe $50 on trademe??? But honestly, what do you really expect them to do, if they dont have any similar replacement drives ?? |

Yea that's right, either take the $43 now or wait maybe two months, or longer, for a repair or replacement. |
