1244967 2011-11-23 00:35:00 This morning when I checked my emails I found a series of delivery failure messages and complaint replies from people in my Hotmail address book who'd been spammed by me.
Does someone just need my email address to send spam from my account, or has it been hacked? If so how?

I have three points of interaction with my account, direct login via web browsers and Microsoft Outlook 2010 on my PC and Laptop.

Or could it be a problem with the VPN software I use on a daily basis or some other app?

I've gone and changed my Hotmail password. Is there anything else I should do?

1244968 2011-11-23 00:38:00 They might not have "hacked" your account. They could just be using your address and hiding behind it. icow (15313)

Yes:
Run a virus scan over the PCs you access your Hotmail from.
Run a Malware/Spyware scan over the PCs you access your Hotmail from.

Once that is done and you're sure there is nothing on either of them. Change your password again AND your secret question.

1244973 2011-11-23 08:18:00 If you've got delivery failure messages in YOUR webmail outbox then likely someone got your password .
Do you have a Steam account with the same password or any other accounts with any of the sites that were hacked in the past months?

I would scan for viruses too and then change your password .

Start with a bootable scanner CD or scanning the HDD in another machine, that way any potential virus will not be active while you try to remove it, makes things so much easier .

You can still get failure messages with spoofed email addresses. I have had them and have never had a compromised account.
Edit: Didn't read your post properly and see the word Outbox.

1244975 2011-11-23 09:10:00 But we both screwed up, I think. You wouldn't get delivery failure messages in the outbox would you?

What I should have said was spam emails in the outbox.

I was scratching my head a bit about the Outbox thing.
