1244916 2011-11-22 22:53:00 The home puter doesn't want to start its OS (that great leap backwards, Windows Vista Home Edition...)

We get as far as the motherboard splash screen and no further will it go. There's a list of key functions appears along the bottom of the splash screen but none of them have the slightest effect on anythingthat I can see.

Anyone got any ideas or do I take it to "the man" (and shell out another ten gazillion megabucks...).

Ta in advance all.

1244917 2011-11-22 23:12:00 Put in your windows Vista DVD or recovery CD -- boot from that, work through the language screens etc, till you get to the page that has Repair your Computer ( bottom left corner) Actual instructions shown Here (www.bleepingcomputer.com).

Sometimes depending on what's wrong you will need "The Man" to look at it -- why ?? Generally speaking Techs charge because they know what to do when you dont.;)

To quote one site:

People don't respect things that are free.

I learned that quote from a man who runs a non-profit organization. Image that. A man who solicits donations for a living candidly told me "people don't respect things that are free." You know what? He's right.

Free advice. Free upgrade. Free entry. None are valued. Free advice is seldom wanted. Free upgrade was something you were going to get anyway. Free entry? The band playing tonight must not be any good.

People associate the value of service with the amount of money that is exchanged for it. How else do you think that lawyer can get away with charging $400 an hour? People naturally make the assumption that if it costs an arm and a leg, then it must be worth it.

So, if customers and friends will assume that the most expensive car is the best one, what will they assume of the free car? Do you want the heart surgeon who charges $500,000 per surgery or the one who works for beer to operate on your mother?

If you dont have the disc's you can download them from digiex.net

1244919 2011-11-23 19:41:00 No go. Even with the vista disk in the drive, it doesn't start. Seems to be completely unresponsive to any input - doesn't matter how many or which keys you press, nothing happens.. Something must be foobahed in there somewhere... slofox (5767)
1244920 2011-11-23 20:01:00 If the keyboard is not responding at all - then thats usually a sign of a failure somewhere. You should at least be able to enter the BIOS, or boot from a CD.

Things you can try -- Another Keyboard -- If the one you have now is USB, try another USB port or another USB board and if the PC has PS2 ports, use a PS2 KB to try as well.

You could try resetting the BIOS by opening the case, and moving the clear CMOS jumper, then put it back, or remove the battery for a while, then put it back.

"if" none of the above work, then its possible the motherboard may have failed. But trying to test that on here is all bar impossible.

Thanks Wainuitech. The keyboard is a ps/2 job and it works fine on my spare, steam-driven puter.

Looks like I might have to consult "the man."
