1244567 2011-11-20 23:14:00 Okay here's the problem I'm having....

I have an old P3 computer I'm running as a home file server with three hard drives, a 40gb is the OS drive, a 320GB is my drive, and a 120GB is my mother and little sister's drive, it is connected to the router, a WMP54GS, through ethernet. it is running Windows XP and I have shared all three drives on the network and checked "Allow other users to change my files". I can access and save and otherwise "mess with" the computer from MY desktop, which runs Windows 7 x64, ALSO connected to the router via ethernet.... My laptop, connected wirelessly with windows 7 x64 cannot even see the file server on the network, even if i do Start > Run > \\servername.... My mother AND sister's computer are both wireless as well but are on the same OS as the server, XP Pro, and can see all shared drives on the file server but constantly keeps saying "Access is Denied" whenever I try to save something to it, move something to it, make a new folder UNDER the shared drive that I CAN open the root of...

Can anyone help?

1244568 2011-11-20 23:21:00 I believe you want to enable Network Discovery and there is also an option about accessing shares without credentials, but I forget what it's called.

Edit:
- Enable network discovery
- Turn on file and print sharing
- Turn off password protected sharing

1244569 2011-11-20 23:27:00 Network discovery and file and printer sharing is enabled (as far as I can tell, it all looks good) on the Windows 7 clients. DragonLord3688 (14939)
1244570 2011-11-22 22:26:00 Had a similar problem that was fixed by reducing the level of encryption on the win7 machine. From memory it is set at 128 bit with winXP being set at around 48 bit?.

Found a page at Microsoft that explained the solution.

1244571 2011-11-23 00:57:00 Are all in the same workgroup (makes it easier)?

Does the server have 'Simple file sharing' on?

Can the Win7 laptop ping the server's IP no.?

1244572 2011-11-23 01:10:00 Have you done this?

- Turn off password protected sharing

1244573 2011-11-23 05:07:00 Going by the original post, its only the computers connecting by wireless that are having problems.

As an experiment - disable the wireless security as a test - see if that makes any difference.

I actually got a similar problem with one of my servers (real server software, not XP) the Laptop wont connect wireless, but plug it into the LAN via cable and its fine.

Also - This article (omegacoder.com) may be of interest.

1244574 2011-11-23 17:22:00 I have tried lowering the 128-bit to the lower setting, I have tried taking the laptop and using the ethernet port instead of wireless. There is no password protecting sharing. All computers are in "WORKGROUP". Any other help would be very much appreciated.

I have not tried removing the wireless security, with the fact I connected my laptop directly to the router and it still not working, I didn't think this troubleshooting method was still valid.

furthermore, after reviewing that article, I still cannot see the file server on my windows 7 laptop, nor can the wireless XP Pro clients access it, they are still getting access denied.

1244575 2011-11-23 18:55:00 What sort of Security ( Antivirus/Firewall) is on the file server ? wainuitech (129)
1244576 2011-11-23 19:23:00 This is a turkey shoot without us being able to physically test things so answering our questions is important. We need to know that the basics are right first.

It is complicated by the appearance of two different problems. One is the laptop not seeing the server and the other is the denied access problem.

You missed two of my questions. If your laptop can't see the server, it would be nice to know that, at least, the IP system is working, hence the ping query.

The question re simple file sharing relates to the access denied problem.
