1244469 2011-11-20 21:36:00 Soon I must make sure my nice new computer has everything in it that I want transferred
from my old one.
No real problem except for my emails.
These contain a lot of information I do not want to lose.

I have only moved emails from one computer to another once -
and that was years ago - but I remember it being a pretty horrible task
If my memory serves me right the darn things are stored miles
deep in the system and even take some finding.

Some of you out there probably do this quite regularly.
I need your advice about the best way to do it.

1244472 2011-11-20 21:59:00 Win7 doesnt have an email program (as part of the install). So, what email program will you be using on Win7? So youre using Outlook Express on XP? Or something else? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1244473 2011-11-20 22:19:00 Simple Way.

Navigate to "C:\Documents and Settings\<User>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{GUID}\Microsoft\"
Copy the "Outlook Express" to an external HDD.

On the new PC download Windows Live Mail (it's free), install and setup your email account. Then choose "File > Import" and select to import from Outlook Express, then point yo the "Outlook Express" on your external HDD, the rest of the process is easy, just read the prompts as they appear.

Once mail is imported you'll see an imported folder odn the left side of Windows Live Mail, from there you can browse/move/whatever your old email to where you want it.

If you want your contacts find your <user>.wab with search, copy it to the ext-HDD, open Windows Live Mail, open the contacts menu and click import, once again point to the *.wab on the ext-HDD.

Ouch !!
Out of my depth again.
I was using Outlook Express on the XP

But another email program?
Darned if I know - I have no experience of any other program except for years ago in
the days of DOS.

What do you suggest.

1244475 2011-11-20 22:46:00 You could use Windows live as L0gic said. But IMO it installs too much crap. Or Outlook if you use Office. Or thunderbird. Or if you use Opera, its email client Speedy Gonzales (78)
1244476 2011-11-20 22:50:00 Windows Live now only installs the 'crap' you select from the Essentials Installer. You can pick mail only. And it will feel very familar if you're moving from Outlook Express.

In my opinion it'll be the easiest to transfer your email to. I do the same thing pretty much every day for our clients as they upgrade from their old PCs.

Agree with that, to many people simply use the default settings to install, and that loads lots of crap.

1244478 2011-11-20 23:13:00 Why keep important info in an email anyway? Save it to a word doc or something if it's that crucial. pctek (84)
