1218996 2011-07-25 08:42:00 I'm in quite a unique position where I have a TV in my office and I watch the music channel whenever I like [/end skite]. But over the past couple of years NZ has turned out some high quality (commercial) music. How can this be? Is there more funding for musicians nowadays? A number of the videos seem have the NZ On Air funding logo (which we didn't use to see) so maybe there is more money for musicians. IMHO some of the music and videos are of an international calibre.

Any such thread would be incomplete without mentioning artists such as :
Gin Wigmore (www.youtube.com)
Ladyhawke (www.youtube.com)
Tiki Taane (www.youtube.com)
or
Dane Rumble (www.youtube.com)

But what I really want to mention are some of the other recent artists like:

The Naked and Famous had a huge song with "Young Blood" (www.youtube.com) - here's hoping they keep it together and keep it up. Their follow up hit "Punching In a Dream" (www.youtube.com) sounds somewhat similar and, although parts of the video are a bit cheap, it isn't too shabby.

Avalanche City : "Love Love Love" (www.youtube.com) has had some commercial success but this later effort almost sounds like Mumford & Sons and I reckon is a pretty good ditty if you like the genre : "Ends In the Ocean." (www.youtube.com)

J Williams featured in the Dane Rumble song above, but I reckon he makes this song work : "She's a Killer". (www.youtube.com) Yes the beginning is a little flat but the jingle grows on you after a while (and no matter how much I look at the beginning I can't tell if the shadow model at the beginning is clothed or not). IMO he has a good future (and I believe he is related to the other big-name Williams, being Sonny Bill).

Brooke Fraser is another who could go places. Most people may have heard of her song "Something in the water" (www.youtube.com) but she has a number of songs that are easy on the ear, again if you are into that genre, like "Betty" (www.youtube.com) and there are plenty more if you like that style of music.

Jonny Love (www.youtube.com) has a pretty cool Kiwi video and the song grows on you.

Of course I can't not mention the North Shore Pony Club performing "Sex Drugs and a Drum Machine" (www.youtube.com) : this is one *right out of the box* that I gather is without any NZ On Air funding whatsoever and I think most people would agree the talent is pretty raw, but I find it kinda catchy and the video is very entertaining. NSFW warning : sorry but wait until you get home to watch this one - it isn't safe to view at work if you have a prudish boss.

No doubt I have missed other good Kiwi acts (like Elemeno P, Smashproof (www.youtube.com), Anika Moa, the Runga sisters, Computers Want Me Dead (www.youtube.com), Op Shop, Kidz in Space (www.youtube.com) and so on and so on, but there are simply too many to name.

Anyway, I reckon we are turning out some pretty good artists at the moment and the future is looking bright for some of this young talent. Yes 1 or 2 will be one hit wonders, but good on them for giving it a go!

What do you think? Any notable omissions or simply awful inclusions? Keeping in mind I've tried to look through the style of music because everyone has their own taste.

If I have missed something good please post a link. Why wait until May to celebrate NZ music?

Cheers, Andrew

1218999 2011-07-25 10:13:00 Thanks zqwerty. Yep, Ms Fay is a recently successful (not so young?) artist I missed, IIRC she attracted some controversy with NZ on Air funding given her pedigree....but that's another story......I purposely hadn't included her because I wasn't sure how genuine she was. Check out these reviews. (thecorner.co.nz)

I hadn't heard about Donna Dean. Is she a recent discovery? Or has she been around a while? At first glance I thought that was Dan Carter on the double bass! :)

1219000 2011-07-25 10:20:00 I can't name the band, or the song in the video, but there was an NZ group that had a video which was entirely stop-motion animation using 100% knitted scenes.

This cost the band something horrendous, well over $100K, maybe even over $500K (I can only remember being shocked).

When you consider how easy it is to spend gajillions on anything TV related I'd personally prefer NZ on Air kept our taxes for more relevant content than a 3 minute time-filler to a tune that will be forgotten within 12 months.

1219002 2011-07-25 10:31:00 That would be Steriogram (www.youtube.com). I thought music video funding was limited to $5000.

I forgot Kids of '88 (www.youtube.com).

I think the band you are thinking of was Steriogram and the clip was Walkie Talkie Man.

EDIT; beaten.
