1244577 2011-11-23 19:44:00 Just to add one more question -- on the W7 laptop that wont see the server -- Homegroup isn't enabled is it ? wainuitech (129)
1244578 2011-11-24 03:17:00 Sorry linw,

The laptop cannot see the server at all. Pinging the local ip 192.168.1.108 returns 4 valid packets of data. I have disabled simple filesharing and made sure all access is set appropriately on the file server.

Here's a weird tidbit I just found out... The local ip addresses seem to keep changing, at one time it was 192.168.1.100, now its .108. and one day it was .102 I think. although the router has been reset a couple of times.

Homegroup is enabled on both Windows 7 clients, yes, should I disable it? and if so how so?

1244579 2011-11-24 03:22:00 A router can issue out different IP address's when computers reboot.

That can be a problem sometimes, esp if something like a server is turned off, then on again. If the Server has a static IP set then it will stay at that IP always as long as its not turned off, other computers if they are set to obtain automatically can get any numbers in the routers range. This shouldn't affect the permissions connection though.

1244580 2011-11-24 08:50:00 Yes, disable the home groups. They are for win 7, only, networks. Got to Control Panel/Network and Sharing Center. Bottom left is an item called HomeGroup. Click it and disable the home group.

Enable Simple File Sharing on the server allowing for guest access. This is the easiest to deal with. This may let the xp clients access the shares. If not, check the share security is set to allow "Everyone" full access.

Bit puzzling that the desktop is fine with server shares. Does it have a common login name/password with the server?

1244581 2011-12-10 01:32:00 No common login information, no static IP... I've left the homegroup at least on my laptop. And I can see ALL computers sharing SOMETHING on the network EXCEPT the server, however trying to access any of them says that the network path can't be found, event hough I clearly see them right there... a customer's laptop i'm working on right next to me asks for a username and password. 1244582 2011-12-11 07:32:00 This is an old network troubleshooting site but IP stuff hasn't changed much. winhlp.com

In any event, most of us can learn a fair bit by plowing through it.
