1244479 2011-11-21 00:15:00 Yeah i would install thunderbird on the xp system, it will convert your outlook express to TB. Then install TB on the win7 machine and copy the files over. TB can be customised to where the emails sit very easily Gobe1 (6290)
1244480 2011-11-21 21:16:00 Why keep important info in an email anyway? Save it to a word doc or something if it's that crucial.

Yes fully agree.
But pretty useless advice in my case.
We are retired and most of my mail I regard
as fairly unimportant. I delete masses of commercial junk.
Then months later realise I need some info contained
in an old email.
It has always been very easy to find. Problem over.
So I ask why save to yet another program when I already
have it.
But if I was running a business - that would be different.
Thanks for the interest.

1244481 2011-11-22 07:03:00 If you have some programming related stuff or task to perform then you have to upgrade your computer on regular basis.Any how it is good to listen about this. SteveDavis (16625)
1244482 2011-11-27 04:42:00 [QUOTE=l0gic;1061361]Simple Way.

Navigate to "C:\Documents and Settings\<User>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{GUID}\Microsoft\"
Copy the "Outlook Express" to an external HDD.

On the new PC download Windows Live Mail (it's free), install and setup your email account. Then choose "File > Import" and select to import from Outlook Express, then point yo the "Outlook Express" on your external HDD, the rest of the process is easy, just read the prompts as they appear.

Well I have made some sort of progress. Only took me about 3 days before I got Windows Live Mail up.
I also copied all my outlook express files to a flash drive (I don't possess an external hard drive.)Still no real problem so far - BUT then I tried the next bit "File > Import"
I can find nowhere to access this - just no mention of FILE anywhere. Guess I must be looking in the wrong place. Help.

Once in Windows Live Mail, press ALT and the File, Edit, Etc menus will appear.

Over near the top right corner of Windows Live Mail there is an icon I forget what it looks like but if you click on that you'll geta small drop-down and have the option to always show the menu bar.

1244484 2011-11-29 04:25:00 Well I am getting there (thanks also to some help from TelstraClear.
But although I seem OK to send emails all the INFILE emails (including test messages I send to myself) are ending up on the old computer.
I presume there is an easy way to turn off the old computers "Outlook Express" (preferably some method whereby I can turn it back on again if needed).

So what do I do?

1244485 2011-11-29 09:31:00 I assume by "infile" you mean "inbox".

Do you have Outlook Express set to start up when booting up (with an entry in the Startup Folder (click Start Button > All Programs > Startup etc)), if you have, delete that entry (if not, dont bother :)).

If when you start OE manually, it downloads your emails automatically, you can stop this by going to the menu bar and clicking Tools > Options > General (tab) and untick "Send and receive messages at startup", and the line under that too.

Can you receive your emails ok in Windows Live Mail ?

1244486 2011-11-29 21:45:00 On your older PC.. Open Outlook Express, select Tools/Accounts.

Click on the Mail tab, highlight Your Account and click on the Properties button. Click on the Advanced tab, in the Delivery section, select the checkbox to "Leave of copy of messages on server."

Select the appropriate checkbox to delete the messages from the server after a certain number of days, or until the messages are deleted from the Deleted Items in Outlook Express.. I usually choose to delete after 30 days.

(There will be similar option in pretty much the same steps in Windows Live Mail)

If you set both you will effectively be able to check future incoming messages on both computers.
