1218835 2011-07-25 07:06:00 Because they were there first and the ones who own most of the US moved in and took it all uninvited?

The Indians are a vanquished people .

<snip>

You beat me to it Joe - it's called "ownership by right of conquest" and has been an "accepted" (by the winners!!) means of acquiring land and wealth down through the centuries .

Perhaps we consider ourselves more enlightened these days if we consider it unethical .

But none of us would be where we are today had that not been the way of things at some dim distant point in time . No point in making a fuss about it (or apologising for actions taken by ancestors who were not accountable to us) - it's just the way things were .

1218836 2011-07-25 20:09:00 They never build freeways, high rise buildings or a monetary system - useless!

neither did the invaders until cars had been invented first .

High rise buildings - needed the population to justify it .

Money? America didn't invent money, they have invented dodgy mortgages though .

1218837 2011-07-25 22:04:00 I can always count on some person (singular) to toss an anti-US statement into the mix.

Look -> I was born here, mistake as it might be, but in another life I could be YOUR next door neighbor!

Then you'd ----well, let's not go there.

PS - I'm sorry you lost your house in Mississippi. It must have been a severe economic blow, as it's still festering inside you.

1218838 2011-07-25 23:35:00 I recall, with other Uni students, chatting to US navy sailors in Auckland City pub around 81/82 from their nuclear sub stationed in Auckland harbour. Some mentioned they felt guilt about American Indians being pushed in the background of their lands or something. Funny though, why US army Helicopters are named after Indian tribes. More funny never hear about their plight (if any), as compared to African Americans or gays. Though remember seeing an interesting documentary produced by actor Robert Redford (surprising being an all American typecast at the time) about their plight. kahawai chaser (3545)
1218839 2011-07-26 00:32:00 The Indians receive a stipend - heck, it's a full-blown tax-free income from the time they are born, gets escalated to more when they turn eighteen and it's all from the US taxpayers.

They get this income for life and usually they just drink it away or buy drugs - peyote and marijuana is their choice although cocaine is hitting heavy now too.

Where my dad lived in Nevada, the so-called 'Indians' with a tribe of just 30 members or so have a 10,000 acre place that's their own - they take all the game meat they want including any strays that wander over from pastures owned by ranches - and then they drive to town, for cases of beer and hard liquor, and then rob the liquor store or steal a new car off a sales lot and drive with impunity to their sovereign nation where the cops can't go and the tribal council sees: NOTHING --- nor will even ask if someone has a new car and shouldn't.

They will drive it until it runs outta gas and abandone it - which cannot be rescued by the legal owner, even though they can SEE their car from the road.

The feds build them a new fire station every year, stock it with rescue gear, hoses, pumps, huge fire trucks and an air conditioned garage for them to park the vehicles in.

On each yearly 'Emergency Readiness' inspection by the government - the fire trucks are all up on jacks - wheels, engines, transmissions are missing, lights and all the brass and chrome is on their personal cars and the station has been burned out by fire.

The next time they arrive, the feds build a new one all over again and stock it fully too. Over and over.

The Indians - if they had a gripe - really cannot complain since they are fed, housed, medically taken care of for life and they are sales tax-exempt when they actually buy something outside of their reservations (instead of just stealing things).

Yup - pity them all you want - they are rich and they don't care.

Did you here the one about the Texan and a Maori talking to each other in a bar in Auckland.
Texan : "I can hop on my horse at six o'clock in the morning and ride all day and I still can't reach the other end of my ranch."
Maori : "Yeah I used to have a horse like that too.":D

1218841 2011-07-26 01:23:00 Hey folks,

If we could keep the race-based generalisations to a minimum, that'd be neat, thanks.

Do you have trouble understanding the joke I gave above.

If we could keep the race-based generalisations (sic) to a minimum, that'd be neat, thanks .

It kinda goes with the territory here .

I'm the token Yank (the noun, not the verb this time) and there are some who either don't like Yanks, don't like me or don't know for sure who their war-daddy is .

1218844 2011-07-26 02:37:00 My comment, FWIW, was directed at everyone. This thread is skirting the line at the moment, nothing infractable as yet, but I'm just letting you know. Zara Baxter (16260)
