2011-07-23 08:19:00 | I was asked for advice and said I would buy Android over Fruit but not to take only my advice, but I think they will end up with an Android device since they would prefer not to have iTunes or to have to get apps to do normal everyday stuff. They could still prove me wrong and go with the hype, in which case I will remind them from time to time how gullible they were :devil | gary67 (56) | |
2011-07-25 00:00:00 | Have decided to pick up a tablet since I have a friend going over to the US in a couple weeks and he's offered to pick one up for me. Do not want an iPad. Just can't decide now between the Asus, Acer or the Samsung. Any recommendations? From what I've read, the Asus seems to be the better of them (though the others are close) but can I just buy the 16gb version, and then buy a sd card to up the storage space? Seems a lot cheaper that way than spending the extra $100 on the 32gb model

2011-07-25 01:57:00 | I have a mate who has just bought an iPad coming over tonight - he needs some help in understanding it (he not the most "tekkonodgikal"), so I will get a decent amount of time to have a bit of a play with it. He has bought it because it has a specific app he will use in his work (insurance broker) and it will make the sales process easier for him as his customer will do the data entry for him, directly into the iPad app. (I believe he has also bought a keyboard for it, but it hasn't arrived yet.) Personally, (if I had the cash and the inclination) I would still lean towards an Android-based toy, for reasons listed in various other anti-iPhone threads. I have had a play (brief) with the Xoom and have seen the Toshiba Thrive (but it wasn't running in the shop) - both seemed reasonably heavy in comparison to the iPads I have picked up, but I liked the available ports on the Tosh and the non-slip backing. Wouldn't go near anything with an Acer label (although they got good marks in a recent Consumer magazine - one of the reasons I have lost faith in that magazine! :))

If you're buying purely on the merits of hardware, then the iPad2 is the clear winner - thin. light, fast, good battery life, nice build quality etc. But it comes with the massive hegemony that is Apple, and all the walled garden crap that entails. If you're an Apple person, then it's a no-brainer. The Aconia was ok, and actually had a better screen in some respects than the iPad2, but was a bit slower, heavier etc. My preference currently would be the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (NOT the 10.1v that's being sold here at the moment). The problem is the price, which is somewhat steep. |

2011-07-25 06:12:00 | I have played with - as in worked - with both Andriod and iPad, found them both frustraiting. Might be ok as a toy, but no good as a tool. I realise that the reason I would use one is not the reason probably most others would use them ie. emails, a bit of browsing etc. But about the only one I have seen so far as a tool I could use is the Gigabyte S1080 that runs Win 7 Pro www.ascent.co.nz but am still reserved about it. I want one that I can take onsite, config networks, routers, servers and such. I'll wait until the next generation of tablets come out, I'm sure by then the advancements and capabilities will be huge and will be worth the wait.
