I think the current rules are pretty good as they are, although perhaps a bit of clarification around the following could be useful: Use of proper English. While the current rules don't explicitly forbid it, the convention here has always been to use proper, well-formed English when posting. The odd mistake doesn't bother anyone, but posts full of txt-spelling, walls of text with no punctuation or capitals, all-caps posts etc just annoy people, and often result in the poster of such being flamed.
Controversial topics of discussion - I think the rules could use a bit of a reminder to "play the ball, not the man". Threads involving heated debate sometimes turn sour quite quickly when someone decides that throwing insults is a valid way of defending their position - sadly all this gets is a thread lock and bans, and spoils the discussion for others who are legitimately debating the topic at hand. I know this is already covered in rule #1, but reiterating it can't hurt.
Using the PM system to ask members for help. Requests for help should be posted in the help forum where they belong - users shouldn't just PM individual members for help unless first invited to do so. I'm not sure how widespread this behavior is, but it's not uncommon for random members to PM me for help on something they have decided I probably know the answer to. While this may be convenient for them, it doesn't help anyone else who may have the same issue later, and I find it annoying when people I don't know message me expecting instant, personal attention to their problem.

Other than the above, I don't really have any major gripes with the rules as they are now - things seem to largely work pretty well :).

1218300 2011-07-22 02:20:00 Could we get a Word Game forum??

I think my lovely mods and I are unanimous in saying "nuh uh."

FWIW, I'm on one forum where the word game stuff works really well, but it has under 100 regular posters, which keeps it in check. Even so, they have to delete the threads regularly to stop it overwhelming the poor server.

Surely all of that is self-governing backed up by the judgment of the mods?

As for the last point, I'd ignore any direction of that nature if it was included in the site rules, if I had a specific request for a person then I'd direct it to them, If you get more then most its because your abilities are recorgnised.

Though I'll keep it in mind for the future that I'm not to call upon you directly :illogical

I didn't intend my post to be "a list of things that the rules really need"; they're minor points only - possibly I wasn't clear enough.

Though I'll keep it in mind for the future that I'm not to call upon you directly :illogicalI have no problem with people asking me direct questions - perhaps I was a bit unclear in making my point. What I have a problem with is the following: I help someone with a problem on the forum, the issue is resolved, and the other member is happy with the outcome (this is a good thing).
Another member, usually someone reasonably new to the forum, sees the thread.
Based on the thread content, they decide that I am the best person to help with their problem.
They send me a PM explaining their problem and asking for help. Often these messages are quite vague on the details of the actual problem, and can be quite demanding.
My usual response to such a message is a courteous reply asking the member to post their problem in the help forum, letting them know that I will answer there, and explaining why posting there is a better idea than messaging me directly. After all, isn't the whole point of a forum to enable public sharing of knowledge?

The main reasons I object to people PMing me with their problems are: If I help them with their problem privately, nobody else with the same issue gets to see it. If the problem and associated solution is posted publicly, others with the same or similar issue can benefit from it, regardless of whether or not they are a member.
Nobody else can learn from a discussion that takes place in private.
Asking me directly means that nobody else can add their two cents - while I may be able to help, often the more eyes focused on a problem, the better the eventual solution. I'm only one guy with limited knowledge - there are plenty of areas where I'm not the best person to ask. With two exceptions, none of the forum regulars have ever done this to me (and the ones who did are people I know personally outside of PressF1) - most of the PMs I receive are things that absolutely belong in a PM, and if they relate to a help thread usually contain additional info that shouldn't be publicly available.

Note also that I have no problem with someone PMing me to draw my attention to a thread, if they're specifically after my input and worried I may not have seen it.

1218304 2011-07-22 03:17:00 Question Zara - have you received any spam from posting your email addy in that sticky thread? The spam bots seem to be quick at picking up emails around here. --Wolf-- (128)

We're not in England, and not many of us are "proper" either ;-)

Not a sausage. Er, spiced ham sausage, that is ;-)

I have had three very nice emails from forum-dwellers, though.
