1246018 2011-11-28 01:24:00 I still have a cdma mobile and am thinking of updating before Xmas to take advantage of telecoms $60 credit and christmas pack. I was in the Telecom shop today asking about the Motorla Defy and the assitant told me it would use 15mb of data a day cos you cant turn it off on the phone. So would that be right? Cant you have it set just for phonecalls and texting and just turn on the fancy stuff when u need it? Does this apply to all smartphones? I hope not else I'll have to have a rethink. PS this may seem strange but the real thing I'm interested in is the camera. Clod (7853)
1246019 2011-11-28 01:53:00 You can certainly disable mobile data usage on an Android phone. What features exactly do they think will use 15mb/day? Maybe if you're actively using it for email etc.... inphinity (7274)
1246020 2011-11-28 01:55:00 Why not just download the manual from telecoms site and read it. That should answer any questions you have. CliveM (6007)
1246021 2011-11-28 02:22:00 There's no reason it would use 15mb a day all by itself. Probably the salesman has experienced that from a phone with an app running he didn't know how to disable.
I have a galaxy S setup to use wi-fi at home and work. I consider myself a light user of data, I mainly use it for checking my E-mail and a bit of GPS navigation. Plus a bit of online gaming via tethering once a month at my LAN club.

I have a 100mb a month addon for my prepay for $10 and usually don't use it all, occassionally I top it up with a 2nd 100mb.
The main thing is to turn off all the auto update options on apps and disable anything that likes to constantly update, it can take a bit of investigating to find the culprits at times.

It's likely the usage will be high the first month or so while you play with all the features.
I also use an app called 3G watchdog to keep on eye on my usage.

1246022 2011-11-28 07:08:00 Thanks folks. Yes reading the manual would be a good idea but dugimodo's info was more what I wanted to know. Better to find out the facts from people who use smartphones in the real world. Besides who said I'd understand the manual. Clod (7853)
1246023 2011-11-28 16:16:00 Download an app called APN then add the short cut to the desk top when it red, data turn off, green data turn on, can still use the wireless anytime. Nice young lady at the telcom shop did that for me when i brougt the phone. I find if you have a negtive experance like that, go back and try somebody else works for me. 1246024 2011-11-28 20:26:00 Total crap!

Salesman should be shot in the foot. It's dead easy to turn off the data, and its also dead easy to keep track of your data and monitor whats going on so you don't get "stung" by 3G data charges :) Go for it, nice little phones the Defy is :)
