1245782 2011-11-27 03:35:00 I have an old NEC Versa E3100 laptop. The battery has died and it will cost a few bucks to replace. It's not worth the expense as the HDD is only 60Gb and i have a couple of other replacements, a 500Gb HP and a backup ASUS Netbook. What I would like to do is place the NEC HDD in an external case and use it as a separate drive for the HP.

As the full set of apps are still on the drive, how do I go about removing them (eg, WinXP, etc) and leaving some of the apps and of course, all of the data?

Cheers

1245783 2011-11-27 06:43:00 You want to attach a drive with XP installed on it to a different computer running Win7 or something?

I did that recently. I managed to get the attached drive to work after a fashion but it wasn't worth the effort. I should've taken Wainuitech's advice at the time and reinstalled XP from scratch

1245784 2011-11-27 06:59:00 I tried an XP reinstall recntly. Install went OK but to install SP3 I needed SP2 which needed SP1.

Although there was a link for SP1 I could never connect so I couldn't then install SP2. Gave it all up as a bad job.

In most cases the the apps won't run from the disk assuming you are not going to boot from the external drive.
I would just attach it and then delete all the directories that you don't want.
