| 1245746 | 2011-11-26 16:15:00 | Will the following connection work? Single port ADSL modem (connecting to Broadband Internet ISP) - IP Add: 192.168.1.254 - works OK. I wish to connect a wireless ADSL router (IP Add: 192.168.1.1) to this single port ADSL modem. I used a CAT5E cable to link the above but it doesn't work! You may ask, why don't I just use the wireless ADSL Router and forget about the single port ADSL modem? Answer is simple: I've no specific reasons, just out of curiosity. From memory, I think I've seen this setup before. Is it possible at all to get it working? |

| 1245747 | 2011-11-26 20:02:00 | It will work, but what is normally done is to put the wireless router into AP (access point) mode and turn off DHCP (you don't want two DHCP servers). And plug the cable from the modem into one of the standard RJ45 sockets on the wireless AP. |

| 1245749 | 2011-11-26 21:57:00 | By turning off DHCP :) You can also change it's IP if you want, (even to a different subnet if you want to make it practically invisible to nosey users) Basically, settings other than the wireless on the "AP" are irrelevant, as all it is doing is authenticating connections to it's 'internal' interface. All your clients network settings (IP, gateway, DNS servers etc.) are obtained from the DHCP server on the single port router. |

| 1245753 | 2011-11-26 23:03:00 | That should be irrelevant anyway, as the ADSL is not connected, and bridging only affects traffic from the WAN to LAN. edit: just twigged to what you meant about the ADSL user/pass needing to be set (rather than CP access u/p as I assumed). You could just use anything you want, as the routine will just be checking for "a value" in those fields, it's only used for the ADSL auth, which is not even plugged in. |

| 1245755 | 2011-11-27 02:54:00 | It can be done (I did it for a friend) but it's a pain, and can be difficult to get back into the configuration again to change anything afterwards, without doing a full reset, if you can't remember some things (because you need to set your machine to static manual IP and then remember what IP the device has when it's NOT getting one from DHCP from the other device) That's why I use a separate wireless AP which is AP ONLY and nothing else, and is designed to just attach to an existing network, and lets you manage it as well without having to change IP address. But if you already got the other one, and it works, then no worries! |
