1219553 2011-07-27 22:46:00 Why are we moaning sooo much about Fruit & Vege. prices?

Australia has had a 67% increase including Bananas @ $14 a kilo.:yuck: Let's not moan too much.

1219554 2011-07-27 22:53:00 I saw tomatoes in Pak N Save for $12+ yesterday. Bananas were about $2.78.

I grow my own tomatoes. I do not buy bananas unless they are under $2.

1219555 2011-07-27 23:04:00 I go to the independent guys and avoid supermarkets if I can.
Seems to work out pretty good, can get a fortnights veges and fruit for around $20-$30

The price of bananas in Australia is due to a shortage caused by Cyclone Yasi which wiped out 75 per cent of the crop. They don't import bananas from other countries.

1219557 2011-07-27 23:08:00 Grow a lot of our own vegies and have planted several fruit trees including apples, pears, plums, crab apple as well as strawbs, raspberries, boysenberries and grapes. We only have a normal 700 sq/m town section but don't have a lawn. Can't see the point of having grass when we don't have livestock to eat it. DO have 4 chickens though so get our own eggs too gary67 (56)

Good advice here. I usually buy vegetables at Pak N Save and go past a fruit an vegetable shop on the way home, without stopping. I might try stopping there next time.

1219559 2011-07-27 23:20:00 Supermarkets aren't cheap.

$15 tomatoes there last week but $8 at one of the local vege shops.

The vege shops vary too.

Up the road here their kiwifruit is 59c, further along 79c, Hobsonville, 39c, along a bit 29c.

pays to shop around for stuff.

I knew that smells of protectionism to me.
