1219327 2011-07-26 11:16:00 My current laptop (HP Pavilion dv6 1204ax) is coming up to 2 years old. Recently it has started overheating and freezing up, then won't boot for around 5 minutes. I've tried using compressed air to clean out all the vents but the problem persists.

I got a supercover warranty with the laptop ($30, they made me a deal) so is it worth taking back? Will they replace it or just fix it? I figure it's covered by CGA too so should at least be able to argue that.

1219328 2011-07-26 11:32:00 Just take it back. They will send to HP service center. HP service center will then change the heatsink and fan. Problem solved. :D

Only problem is that I had to pay $250 to get mine fixed :(

The older DV5's,DV6's are known to overheat. The new ones have been fixed.

My friend actually has the same laptop and his one also overheated. He sent it to bond n bond and they fixed it under supercover warranty.

1219329 2011-07-26 21:38:00 The AMD based DV3/5/6/7 are all good at over heating. Alex B (15479)
1219330 2011-07-26 21:44:00 Me thinks they would just fix it which they are fully entitled to. They don't have to give you a replacement or a new 2yr old equiv. Prob a new HSF and thermal paste. If no warranty you could DIY but the fan might be on the bottom under the motherboard require a bit of time and effort. And that when you pop open the case you just *might* find there might be hairline gaps ... Nomad (952)
1219331 2011-07-26 22:03:00 Supercover is amazing, take it back under that and they will do things to fix, if at least not try and fix your laptop The Error Guy (14052)

Also some intel's.

1219333 2011-08-01 04:13:00 So it looks like they're replacing the hard drive, fan and motherboard. Thing is, they want me to pay $100 + GST for data backup?!?

I'm trying to convince them to just send me the old hard drive and I'll get the data off it myself (I have most of it backed up, really just movies and music and a few files from the last few weeks which I haven't).

Is it just me or should this also be covered under the supercover warranty? Or are they right in wanting to charge me for it?

1219334 2011-08-01 04:22:00 Also some intel's.

No where near as common, if its intel going over temp, its probably because the fan is blocked up with lint.

1219335 2011-08-01 04:23:00 ^ data is pretty much never covered, but they should have given you a warning before charging you. Alex B (15479)
1219336 2011-08-01 04:37:00 Tell them to forget the hard drive and wipe it if you dont mind the loss. They shouldnt really have to replace the HDD if it was overheating...Must be another problem. Lucky for you, you get free new mobo, hdd and fan. sahilcc7 (15483)
