1219100 2011-07-25 16:40:00 As a newly-wed couple in the late-60s, we lived on Cerritos Street in Anasleim (not a typo) right behind and in the shadow of the Disneyland Hotel, and this was a neat experience for more than any singular reason, but this one stands out most in my memories.

Although it's pared down to just the elephants and a few dog-and-pony carts now, it used to have the whole circus parade from their train cars into the empty fields near Disneyland.

The Calliope lead off the parade, and then clowns in costume, dancers and ladies in tights and a flame-thrower, and juggler or three, monkeys on leashes, and some just came over and tried to go through your pockets for coins, The Bearded Lady, Lizard Man, roustabouts, gandy dancers and riggers, lions and tigers in rolling cages - the whole schmier!

We had a kid or two (memory fades there just a tad) and they'd get all excited as we'd sit on lawn chairs and await the arrival and parade. This usually took place at night - sometimes late --- well after midnight - so it was a big deal to the kids to stay up like that.

Not all as rosy as it may seem though, the fireworks nightly from Disneyland would wake the kids, and they'd get up and scream: "Boom-booms!!!" at the top of their lungs and then it took another hour for them to go back to sleep.

Originally a novelty, we'd run outdoors to watch the aerial bombs right over our heads (for a while) and this took place every single ste-e-e-e-n-king boring night.

We moved ----------> the night when someone machine-gunned all the cars on the street in front of us ---- but it was a great experience (the circus parade, not the bullet holes) that I look rearward to with fond memories.

1219101 2011-07-25 20:50:00 So what actually is a roustabout Joe? gary67 (56)
1219102 2011-07-25 21:57:00 A roustabout is one of the guys who rigs the tents and generally is responsible for the tent integrity via the gripes, come-alongs, hawsers, knots and tent pegs, etc. SurferJoe46 (51)
1219103 2011-07-26 00:32:00 Sort of like a scout master then? gary67 (56)
1219104 2011-07-26 00:47:00 Oh, I dunnow about THAT!

Never saw a Scoutmaster with a 40lb sledge hammer driving stakes into the ground to belay a tent riser, or repair multiple yards of canvas fabric and rig high-wire gear and wire the lights and start the generators and assemble the rides and feed Jojo The Dog-Faced Boy, and shave The Bearded Lady's back for a blind date - or a lot of things for which I am sure there are NO merit badges.

No more like a general dogs body.
