1246383 2011-12-04 04:42:00 That particular thread, last week I think it was, the person sent the drive back to the shop -- Who offered a refund, not Seagate agents, or Seagate them selves.

Ah, my mistake. I guess I didn't read that thread properly - I thought it had been referring to Seagate themselves.

Edited: Explain this then -- looking at seagates site, and working through the firmware upgrade, why then do Seagate say its important to upgrade the firmware. Also look at the link speedy posted, there a download link for it via ISO.

Doesn't make sense. There are no downloads for firmware from Seagate higher than SD1A to fix any firmware issues - the SD1A is the fixed firmware

If you click the link under 'Downloads and Actions' it takes you to the page to download SD1A firmware (which his drive already has, going by the label)

I think perhaps that information page you posted the screenshot from is just using the model number only to determine if the drive needs an update, and the reference to SD1A is showing that is the version you'd need to upgrade to, if you had to.

1246384 2011-12-04 05:00:00 I've tried the ISO image bootable disk plan but it didn't recognize my hardrive. It is obviously a hunk of metal and plastic! ChazTheGeek (16619)
1246385 2011-12-04 05:04:00 Warranty it - and you will get a good working HDD. "If" its a firmware problem, by the time it cant be seen in the BIOS its to late. Either way contact the place as mentioned previously and you will get sorted.

There are ways to fix it, BUT requires a lot of mucking about, and you will void whats left of your warranty -- so why even bother trying to fix it -- send it in and have it sorted correctly.

1246386 2011-12-04 05:30:00 Yep! I filled in a form on seagate.com and all I need to do is sent it away! Thanks for the idea! ChazTheGeek (16619)
1246387 2011-12-04 06:11:00 :clap Now you should get a good working drive, and at least know its been tested fully and up to standard for Seagate .

Lesson learnt hopefully -- not all good deals on Trade-me are "good"

I recovered a drive with the firmware issue, it's a pretty simple procedure if you are familiar with that sort of thing.

If you trash the firmware even more you probably would lose your warranty but if you recovered it and then upgraded the firmware I don't see how that will void your warranty. No different from recovering a motherboard BIOS or any other firmware.

Not advocating that he should try it though, in fact I wouldn't either, because in this case I don't think that's the problem since it's already got the SD1A firmware.
