1245806 2011-11-28 20:54:00 The telecom supplied router/modem's are junk. I had 4 of them, each being replaced by one even worse than the other. They eventually sent me a 'Business class modem' which was still the same thing but only had 802.11 b/g. They need to stop making these.

After the 'business class modem' i lost it and went out to buy a high-priced modem/router. Bought a $400 Belkin one and havnt had any problems with my internet since.

The actual problem i had with them was that everyone in my house would lose connection. It would not pick the connection back up and we had to restart the modem manually. On the days that it would work, it was very slow. I mean i'd have dial-up speeds for my download speeds. Simply pathetic, throw it out, lest it leave you more problems in the future.

1245807 2011-11-28 22:56:00 There are actually firmware upgrades available for the Thomsons, from sites such as http://www.modem-help.co.uk/ - but they are OEM'd from other ISPs and who knows if they would even work in NZ.

They also don't install with the default upgrade program either, so I don't know how you'd get around that either.

1245808 2011-11-29 01:08:00 Odd that different people have different experiences with modems. I've had experience with several Thomson TG585 devices and all worked just fine.

But they are programmed for undemanding users so I wouldn't recommend them for gamers/port fiddlers.

1245809 2011-11-29 09:47:00 Oh yeah the Thomsons work just fine as a set-and-forget device, and UPnP works fine too.

But the firmware is no good if you actually want to configure anything, which you may have to, as not everything supports UPnP. (Also it can create a security risk)
