1219911 2011-07-30 05:01:00 Chlorination: I assume you will use HTH (high test hypochlorite), which is Calcium Hypo Chlorite. When added to water it dissociates and leaves a residue of Calcium Hydroxide which will add a load to your filter, indeed if it the filter is not backwashed often enough the Calcium Hydroxide turns to Calcium Carbonate (limestone) and can permanently clog the filter. I once saw a school pool with a layer of cemented sand about 100 mm thick, that had to be broken up. It is far better to add the HTH to a bucket of water, let it settle, and then decant the liquid into the pool. Discard the residue. I agree entirely about Chloramines. Brucem (8688)

Granules are cheaper than buying liquid chlorine, but its far more effective to dissolve it and let it settle before dosing the pool

1219914 2011-08-22 08:09:00 Ok so we have actually moved into the property now, went out and had a look at the pump / filter today, It has 6 settings: Filter (I'm assuming this is 'normal' mode?), Closed, Backwash, Recirculate, Waste and Rinse. Also I believe it is a sand type filter (big round black drum).

The pressure gauge is showing 170 Kpa, which is 1/8th of the way on the 'clean' side (one side of the gauge is blue and marked 'normal', the other is red and marked 'clean'. Now I assume that means that the filter is clogged up and needs back-washing. So do I just set it to backwash and leave it for a few hours?

Complete pool novice here as you might have guessed.

One more question. The previous owners left all the accessories including a vacuum and hose. Where does said hose connect?
