1219901 2011-07-29 09:13:00 So my wife and I have just purchased a new house...with a pool.

Never owned a pool before and after reading countless websites dedicated to such things I am quite confused!

Does anyone know any good books, or other sources of information that could help me maintain a pool?

1219902 2011-07-29 09:49:00 We used to have one.

Run the filter regularly.

Clean regularly.

Chlorine - a lot of people go overboard. Put it in at night, stinks like crazy, does it's thing and disappears once the suns been shining on it next day for a while. That's good, don't add more at this point, no-one wants to swim in goopey smelly chlorine.

Weekly perhaps although it does depend a bit on usage. Less so in winter if ot being used.

Check the PH, there are also different things you buy to adjust this, especially if kids are using in it, pee alters the PH and can make it cloudy and so on.

Some reading material:

Also talk to the people at your pool supply shop, they can advise on different things too.

1219904 2011-07-29 11:10:00 Parents used to have one from NZ cascade pools, use to shock dose it during winter, and back wash the filter to rinse it every 2 weeks after a lot of use in summer. User manual here (www.cascade.co.nz). kahawai chaser (3545)

This seems to be a common misconception, i . e . if you can smell the chlorine, you've added too much .

In actuality, if there's a chlorine smell, you haven't added enough . What you are smelling is a by-product of the chlorine and the nasties in the water it's trying to combat .

"When you walk into a natatorium and smell `that smell,' what you are actually smelling is chloramines, which are caused by the incomplete oxidation of organic material (urine, perspiration, suntan oil, shampoo"

Just to confuse you more :D

Definitely cool, having a pool, gotta be diligent with your upkeep tho (unless you can afford a poolboy (www.imagef1.net.nz)). :devil

1219910 2011-07-30 04:56:00 Another product you put in the pool at the end of the day is Aluminnium Sulphate which probably has a trade name which you sprinkle on the pool and turns into a sticky substance. All the rubbish in the pool sticks to it while it slowly sinks to the bottom. In the morning you vacum it off the bottom of the pool.
