2011-12-07 06:08:00 | SO I have had the linksys wag160n since 6/7/2011, bought from DSE. Have found over the last few weeks the connection of the modem drops out overnight or through periods of non use (eg when I am work during the day). Have goen through the online help process with linksys and they have told me i have a faulty modem and to return it to the shop. SO my question is I now have a credit (or possible refund) of $159 from DSE and am looking for a new modem - recommednation for the same one or a better one - really dont want to spend too much more if i can help it - would be much appreciated. cheers (the modem i have - www.noelleeming.co.nz )

2011-12-07 09:28:00 | I also have same modem/router as you and similar problems. Have actually just posted here tonight looking for help:) While waiting I have done some research and seems this is a common problem with the wag160n model when using wireless. Problem is caused by firmware version 2.00.20 which is on most wag160n's Apparent fix is to download older version 2.00.17 from: www.2shared.com and install it. I have downloaded it tonight but will wait till tomorrow to do the installation. From reviews I have read the WAG 160N is a very good Router/Modem:)

USing the linksys live help (which is very good) they got me to change the wireless channels, monitor it for a week, then reload the firmware and then reset and none of them seem to solve the problem, so this evening they have told me to go and replace it and have given me a reference code to do this with. The issue with mine has not been when using just wireless, so for exmaple if i do not use it overnight the wireless is not active in the morning. WHen I turn on the desktop also with a wired connection that internet connection is not working either and I have to turn the modem on and off agian and then it fires up fine. |

2011-12-07 09:49:00 | Basically the Linksys routers that do both WiFi and ADSL are (by and large) no good. Its a known fault with those models. Their routers that do just one or the other are great though! Get the Netcomm NB6Plu4Wn from PBTech. Under the consumer guarantees act you're allowed to request cash, not just a store credit: www.consumer.org.nz

2011-12-07 18:20:00 | Because its a flaw in the model itself, the device is not fit for the purpose for which it was intended, and is substantial in nature. Substantial basically means you would not have purchased the device had you known about the flaw in advance, amongst other things. That, and you have a note from Linksys themselves that the particular device at the very least is faulty, and you've been advised that other identical models would be no better. Do a search, I quite often say around here that if you're buying a Linksys, make sure it's either JUST ADSL and not WiFi, or JUST WiFi and not ADSL. Things like the Linksys AM300 or the WRT54GL are some of the best, if not *the* best in their classes, but for some reason whenever Linksys stuck ADSL and WiFi together, it never seemed to work out terribly well. The Netcomm would allow you to share a printer from a desktop PC over Wireless, but it doesn't have a USB port itself to plug directly in to.
