| 1246640 | 2011-12-01 19:12:00 | Sooo im fed up with Telecom and their outdated servers (Tauranga) and im thinking of switching ISP. I'm a competitive gamer and i need fast broadband. I've been looking at TelstraClear (ON3Network) however i dont know what plans they can offer. I'm currently paying $90-ish for 80GB with Telecom and + Something else for the phoneline. Not moving to Vodafone, friends have had bad experiences with them. Not Slingshot..slowest internet in NZ. Who should I be going with? Stay with Telecom or move to Telstra Clear? |

Easiest way to make sure - phone them and ask because the packages come with a phone line as well. If looking at the youir current $90 ish @ 80GB, for $65 you get $100GB |

I get pretty rubbish pings (compared to most other players) on Counter-strike source- on the Oz DTK servers around 80-90. Local ones, maybe lucky to get 65-70. |

Looking at my Telstra Cable Invoice, the line rental is $39.94 for the 1st line (we got two lines) Not to be offensive but i did say that i am a competitive gamer. If i am reading this correctly then Telecom will give me faster internet overall. 80-90 ping over 30-50? I think i know which one i'd prefer. Ofcourse Telstra has the higher GB, but i have never gone over 70GB so i wouldnt need 100GB (Unless i were to start recording via Fraps). |

| 1246646 | 2011-12-01 20:00:00 | Switching around ISP is a frustrating task. You will most likely find that you are moving from a 'bad' ISP to a 'worse' ISP. All ISPs in NZ are quite similar in one way or another. Personally, I think there isn't any 'better' ISP than your present provider. My advice: stay with you present provider and try to sort out whatever problems you may have with them. |

In any case except for a few main exchanges all ISPs are using telecom's equipment to connect to customers so it's a little limited by the exchange equipment as to how much difference you can see. Sure the ISP's have their own bandwidth once you get through Telecoms network to it, so there are speed/performance differences, but I find telecoms speed to be about as good as anyone elses. To me the others mainly offer advantages in pricing and plan types rather than actual performance. I do remember noticing a huge difference when I switched from one of Telecoms cheap plans to a pro plan (with Big Time somewhere in the middle for a bit, worst gaming experience ever) in terms of gaming pings and overall usability. |

| 1246648 | 2011-12-01 20:22:00 | A few things come to mind here, the first is: - Lets try fixing your own stuff first. For starters, what router do you have? Secondly, what's your sync speed? 3rd, contact Telecom and turn off Interleaving. Finally, post your *rough* street address (Or PM me it, but feel free to give the address a few houses down the road), and we'll look up and see if you should be cabinetized etc and let you know what sort of speeds and things you should be expecting. |

Yup, and with TelstraClear about to offer "unlimited, free-for-all, no holds barred, no throttling or QoS" weekends, you can expect things to go pear-shaped relatively quickly. Its easy to decrease your pings by turning off Interleaving. I play DotA on my own server in a datacenter in Auckland and get down to 7ms on my regular home DSL connection... |
