1221320 2011-08-06 23:38:00 Yes it does pay to backup your work. The loss of this Chilean girl's work would be more devastating than the loss of her laptop. It appears that she may have backed up her work to the hard drives that were also stolen. This girl, because she was transient, would have no choice but to store her backup drives in the same place as her laptop.

A tourist who takes photos and has his camera stolen would also lose his valuable trip photos. Best way to backup photos from his camera would be to email them home.

Thieves do not give a dam about the other damage they cause when they commit their crime. They will more than likely sell the laptop at a cheap price to a buyer who does not have a conscience.

1221321 2011-08-07 02:44:00 Yep ! having backups in the same place as the Originals is not to clever.

Theres no real reason why backups of important data thats a "must have" cant be uploaded to online storage. Theres plenty to select from.

Seen it plenty of times, people doing backups to an external drive, always attached to the PC/Laptop, OR having the backup drive inside the PC :groan: One gets stolen, so does the other.

Hard drives die, don't have to wait for it to be stolen.

Also, I wouldn't trust motel/hotel security at all.

Online backups are a must, more-so if it's her living, I'd have multiple backups with multiple backup services.

Hardly surprising.
