1220879 2011-08-04 01:22:00 I was watching good morning yesterday and they were talking about increasing school fees so that every student would get an ipad. Did anyone else see it?

I don't think its a good idea at all for a number of reasons...firstly a lot of families can't afford it, secondly, why apple? Most businesses use microsoft, so wouldn't a windows tablet be more useful for the future of students, let alone potentially more affordable? Also, they're not upgradeable, so they would be obsolete in no time. And regardless of what device it was, that would be a lot of money leaving our economy. I think it would be better to just have a desktop pc for each student.

1220880 2011-08-04 01:26:00 I think the schools need to approach all the tablet makers and see what sort of deals they can get first, and yes I believe going the Apple route might be a dumb move since as you say most businesses don't use Crapple.

I thought schools were supposed to teach kids to be ready to enter the workforce not preach "Though must use Apple because we think it looks cool and we are sucked into the hype"

1220881 2011-08-04 01:30:00 If they did that wouldn't a netbook be better having the proper keyboard?
Cheaper too!

Didn't think of that, great idea! Plus, they can be upgraded for at least the following year of education

1220883 2011-08-04 02:08:00 Surely if schools were to buy in bulk they could then sell the ipads to students at a much cheaper rate. This years ipad could well be next years museum piece. Bobh (5192)
1220884 2011-08-04 02:47:00 These are PRIMARY SCHOOL (excuse the yell) students we're talking about.

These very expensive toys would get lost, abused, stolen and wrecked in no time at all.
Those that did survive the kids would be totally obsolete within a few years anyway, as already pointer out by the OP.

It's a totally dumba$$ idea to supply infants with computers in any form, and particularly so if it's my taxes paying for it!

As it is I have major issues with the churning of computers in schools and businesses already. We are being suckered to the tune of tens of millions of dollars every year for unnecessary hardware and software upgrades, and we are all paying for that one way or another.

1220885 2011-08-04 03:57:00 Surely the one spending most on advertising and promotion will take the lead? Maybe we'll see an inquiry somewhere down the line to determine how many senior people in education administration have been converted by handouts from one brand or another. Once the students are leaving school and university thoroughly versed in a specific system, THEY will be the ones determining what businesses will use from then on. coldot (6847)
1220886 2011-08-04 04:59:00 This thread makes me laugh or is it cry ?? -:groan: Less than a month ago Previous thread (www.pressf1.co.nz) Ipads in a school in Auckland "Orewa College has told parents the iPad 2 will be a compulsory stationery item for all year nine pupils next year. "

Oh Wait -- it seems similar ----- some ones getting a back hander from crapple it looks like. Or are the "powers to be" in the education system that gullible and easily lead by the hype. ?

1220887 2011-08-04 05:07:00 The teachers get given Windows laptops, at secondary schools anyway, so surely the students should use a Windows device as well? CYaBro (73)
1220888 2011-08-04 05:14:00 Dumb idea +1 for netbooks or cheap laptops, that should probably be optional because some people may not be able to afford it (as someone has already said). icow (15313)
