1221202 2011-08-07 03:49:00 Total annual income for the Jones family: $21,700

Amount of money the Jones family spent: $38,200
Amount of new debt added to the credit card: $16,500
Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710
Amount cut from the budget: $385

The Jones family needs either a new job or an additional job.

Likewise most of the Western World countries who continue to buy crap but sell bugger all. NZ included.

Bankruptcy for the Jones would probably be quicker and less painful. Not so for Uncle Sam.

I was under the impression his preferred strategy was reduced spending, while the opposition who control the other house wanted the debt limit raised and less of this crazy reduced spending....

1221206 2011-08-07 04:13:00 One of the main reasons the USA and so many other countries have massive debts is because we live in a "must have it now" culture.
Spending money we don't have on things we don't need to impress people we don't know.

Both well said.

Once this government gets back in and sells off the country's silver, we had better get out of the habit of buying the latest and greatest, but then there is always a catch to this as well, Microsoft is a prime example with software.

But the saying is "we can't stand still" otherwise we are going backwards and that will never do, will it !.

Lurking.

1221207 2011-08-07 04:34:00 @BM : that is easier to understand. We should do the same for NZ.

Indeed Andrew we should.

Extracting the exact figures is always a problem here but worth a try. :D

Why don't you give us the source of "your" figures rather than give the false impression that you constructed that analogy?
Of course you could prove my suspicions wrong by doing the same thing for NZ.

Why don't "you" correct them then if you think they're wrong.

No real need

NZ's government is regarded as VERY fiscally responsible along with Australia. There is a detailed realistic plan to balance NZ's government books around 2015/2016 after the effects of the 2008 financial crisis.

NZ/Aus have historically borrowed and then paid down debt, its nothing new. The current big problem with the US is there is no such plan and sovereign debt to GDP is already around 3.5X greater than that of NZ.

There are just too many sites to quote that are repeating the same thing that BM appeared to pretend was his original work, and too many to find out the original source (that is left as an exercise for the reader ), here are some:
