1220899 2011-08-04 23:48:00 The new Asus Eee Pad Transformer with a docking station would be a better way to go. I want one.

X2. Not likely to happen for me though

1220900 2011-08-05 00:08:00 Do we know what they would be actually using them for? If not how does anywhere here know the iPad is not better suited like specific apps etc. Maybe the stuff they want to use has apps for iOS but not android?

With the mucking around thing, you can actually lock iOS down quite alot using the configuration tool, but then there is the argument of they will just waste all their time trying to find ways around that.

You got to remember schools are not interested in custom roms etc/jailbreaks etc, they are going to use them as tools, not toys which seems to be what most android fanbois are in to (IE look at my sweet new theme!!!!111) From a functionality perspective, who cares? True they don't suite everyone, but in a corp environment and school one I reckon they are pretty hard to go past as far as tablets go. Only thing that is stopping me getting one is the lack of decent def display.

1220902 2011-08-05 06:18:00 I've heard that Apple has scrapped their plans for the new children's iPad after realising that iTouch Kids is not a good product name.:D Roscoe (6288)
1220903 2011-08-05 06:30:00 If the school is going to supply it, then yes, I would imagine it would be locked down and only have access to the apps that are neccessary. But if the parents or kids bought/supplied their own, I would doubt the school has any right to lock down someones computer/tab. Schools may not be interested in custom roms etc, but you can bet your boots the kids will be when they get bored. They will test it to limits and beyond if they can. Iantech (16386)
1220904 2011-08-05 07:39:00 I guess the best the schools can do is block certain websites on there wifi gary67 (56)
1220905 2011-08-05 08:14:00 Primary school children should be outside learning about the real world rather than rotting their brains with an iStupid. Agent_24 (57)
1220906 2011-08-05 08:54:00 iPad = primary observed as a gaming device at that age, all software developed is for a closed source platform therefore custom firmware aimed specifically at education is not available.

Will end up lost and stolen/broken/covered in sticky jam prints

far to over priced for what it is.

IMHO, not an iPad. perhaps another tablet but preferably a slightly ruggedized netbook or small laptop. This could even be built to specification such as larger keys etc. In fact if a kiwi company made them we could even retail to other countrys etc who would probably like the idea.

iPad is bad move, its simply based on hype. Our school bought the art department 2x ipads. Sure they are nice but I have never actually seen them used. Nice thought and glad to see the school investing in technology however like smart boards, its usually never used to full potential or properly.
