1220472 2011-08-02 23:39:00 So they do the eyesight tests by staring intently into the phone, then the glaucoma tests by blowing into their phone while you hold the earpiece against each eye in turn? :illogical

Getting the best looking woman in the street to blow in your ear is quite helpful!

1220475 2011-08-03 01:01:00 To Billy T and others - please accord me a little bit of credit here :)

Step 1 - Visit a NZ Optician and get eyes tested.

Step 2 - Ask for/pay for a copy of eye prescription.

Step 3 - Go online and order new glasses after transposing all details from NZ prescription

Step 4 - Pay the $$$$$$

Step 5 - After 5 to 7 days receive new glasses

Step 6 - Walk around like a prize peacock without walking into walls/doors :) :) :)

1220476 2011-08-03 01:21:00 Went to local Rangi optician, paid 1 k for specs, got home and found the $50 voucher that had been received in mail, told no good if presented after the appointment.

I have since directed 3 people to spec savers, and I feel much better.

They will regret doing me out of that 50 buckeroo.

Short version :

Im in auckland. Specsavers say eye exam is $60, lenses + frames from $169 onwards.

Part of the reason why i wanted to get it done in NZ was because my insurance will cover up to $300 per year so it could potentially be cheaper.

The free test in Singapore done by optometrists is almost the same as the one done by the hospitals, so it should be fairly comprehensive.

Short version :

I'm in Auckland. Specsavers say eye exam is $60, lenses + frames from $169 on wards.

Must be prepared to get lower margins and probably a cheaper cost structure.

Exactly what I plan to do, except my significant other claims I'll be walking around like a prize ****k.

When I get my new specs, I just may have to revisit the merits of the significant other ... :p

Thanks to pine-o-cleen, who PM'd me the name of his wife's on-line spec shop. Turns out it was the one I'd pretty much settled on. They provide details of the different measurement requirements and what they mean. You can upload an image of your face, then go ahead and try up to about 1,500 frames to see how they look. Can't go wrong, especially at the price.

1220480 2011-08-03 02:03:00 Asia has free eye test; not NZ .

The eye test might be $70 . . .

All up prob cheaper in Asia .
There are places like Budget Eyewear or Specsavers but they don't tend to carry the big brands if that is what you are after at least the ones they advertise . As something you may recognise OPSM may carry that if you want that .

Way to go if going o/seas like we did .

Hong Kong stop-over in 2003, wife and I had eyes tested and two pairs of glasses each, wife also had the sun visor clip-on as well, about $NZ600 . 00 all up .

NZ at that time about $900 . 00 for test and 1 set spectacles .

Someone above recommended getting eye test done here and buying off-shore .

New Zealand is such a small country; so professional services are expensive .

Lurking .

Mods: are we allowed to give out overseas contacts on PressF1 ? .

1220481 2011-08-03 07:32:00 Singapores smaller than NZ so thats not the main problem. I think its probably distance from global markets...and perhaps less people in NZ requiring spectacles. And maybe because in NZ people are used to high prices, so firms can charge more without getting a consumer backlash. Question (15792)
