1220890 2011-08-04 08:58:00 A very expensive private school on the North Shore told my nephew that his new Asus Lap top could not be used at that school and that he had to buy an obsolete IBM Thinkpad for about $4,000.00! The school had bought a swag of them at a very discounted price. Needless to say, the principle was invited to stick it up his exhaust pipe, preferably switched on.There is a simple little word which should be used, "NO"!

Its all about cash! The idea is that if the students educate themselves they can reduce the number of staff.

1220891 2011-08-04 10:33:00 I would mildly support the idea if the iPad was somewhat useful, but it's not. As a web browser, it's reasonable. The hardware itself is flawless. But a full replacement for a computer? Not in my opinion.

With the software ecosystem of all iOs devices, you either do it apple's way or the highway (or jailbreak, but I'm not that keen on constantly playing a game of cat and mouse). Want a web browser? You get Safari. Nothing else. Music player? iTunes. Nothing else.

Not a good thing to be teaching techie newcomers. Personally, I'd be recommending a Linux-based device, however that's because of my personal bias. At least I'm honest about it.

1220892 2011-08-04 10:50:00 Linux is slightly better so kids won't install a bunch of games but can still use the net.

1220893 2011-08-04 11:44:00 One of the reasons some give is Apple dont get infections -- HA!! time is running out :p Roughly mid way through article (security.cbronline.com) --------then what will the schools do - epic fail AND :help:

I'd take Linux any day over Apple.

1220894 2011-08-04 12:08:00 Obviously, you blokes don't have an iPad.
I'm a staunch desktop with Ubuntu fan for serious computing, but I love my iPad for remote access to the web and emails. It's serious fun!!
What better way to introduce kids to computers?

1220895 2011-08-04 12:12:00 Don't get me wrong, an iPad is good for average surfing, but how do you teach SSH/Telnet using an iPad? Or the difference between 192.168.1.1/24 and 192.168.1.1/16?

Wait, I'm getting ahead of myself here, this is for primary school kids.

1220896 2011-08-04 12:12:00 They are likely to be using a Winblows environment once they get into the real world, why the hell make them learn to use a Lemon (or is that Apple)? Its near worse than making them learn Latin. They should all be told to get a Winblows based laptop/netbook/tablet/whatever, more work for me when they kill them with games and viruses :D

11-13 yr old kids (mostly boys) are the worst, they think they know everything about them and get into settings and such where they should go. I've lost count on the parents systems I have had to repair cause their kids have screwed it up, think what they will do once they have their own and what they will be doing with it.

1220897 2011-08-04 12:14:00 Well, that's one advantage with an iPad, there's fa that you can configure! ubergeek85 (131)
1220898 2011-08-04 23:27:00 If they did that wouldn't a netbook be better having the proper keyboard?
Cheaper too!
The new Asus Eee Pad Transformer with a docking station would be a better way to go. I want one.
