2011-08-06 05:32:00 | I see that Standard and Poors has decreased the USAs credit rating from AAA to AA+ I suspect that this comes as no surprise to most, as the USA has been living way beyond its means for many years and that it has finally been recognised. The supposed bail out, (raising their debt ceiling) is no different to an individual who has maxed out their mortgage and credit cards, and then obtained another credit card to borrow money to pay the interest on the already outstanding amounts. It was also painful to watch the opposing political parties play stupid mind games to try to get some sort of political advantage. As usual the lower and middle classes got well and truly screwed. I hope the rest of the world (including NZ) can learn the lesson and live within their means. HH

2011-08-06 08:56:00 | Who does USA owe the money to? Could it be China? If the arrogant Yanks would pull their heads in and mind their own business instead of playing God they wouldn't be so badly in debt and not hated like they are at the moment. There are plenty of poverty stricken areas in USA which could warrant a bit of attention. Leave the Afghanis etc to sort out their own problems. Whoa is me, China has a Battle Ship! Instant outrage from the Yanks. Apparently the Chinese do not know that the USA is the only country in the world that can have weapons of mass destruction; all others are Terrorists! Whilst they are about it, they should put George Bush and his pommy buddy Tony Blair before the war crimes tribunal for the murder of thousands of people in the middle east. United Nations should insist on this as the Iraq War was not sanctioned. But NO; we can try Goddafi and the Egyptian prime minister, Saddam Hussein, but not a Yank or a Pom!

2011-08-06 09:44:00 | One of the main reasons the USA and so many other countries have massive debts is because we live in a "must have it now" culture. Spending money we don't have on things we don't need to impress people we don't know.

2011-08-06 09:49:00 | The USA is going to have to spend less and perhaps increase taxes. More income has to come from somewhere so that they can pay off their debt. | Bobh (5192) | |

2011-08-06 22:15:00 | The battle to control the finances in the USA between the republicans and the Democrats was exactly the same as when Clinton was President in his Bio he described what happens and it was freaky to see it happening again almost verbatim to what he had written. It's less about the country and more a power trip for the politicians | gary67 (56) | |

2011-08-06 22:38:00 | Our govt is vastly different, they have a crippled welfare system and outrageous military outlay. we have a crippled military and an outrageous welfare outlay....... If we play our cards right we can have neither military nor welfare  we will of course still have the debt.
