1248367 2011-12-13 04:54:00 Hi there,
I have my neighbors laptop on my desk and they had a serious infection that every time they went online someone form India or wherever would ring them up so there was something on their laptop and it was coming up with this is not a genuine install of Windows when it is!

Anyway it was suggested that they needed to reinstall Windows due to this issue which I totally agree with.
So on trying to reinstall using the Recovery partition it failed due to some issue, then because of the CD key being worn off the back and not able to read it, needed to ring HP which I did and just received a set of recovery Cd's for the laptop which should be the right ones due to giving the serial number etc.
It comes up with an error and will not install.

I think it may be because what ever software they downloaded with this hijack has caused a problem so it cant be done.
On boot up it says serial number can not be found which is really weird, almost like they have screwed with the MBR

is there any way I could perhaps use a normal Windows 7 CD to go through the install process and delete the C: partition and them run the Recovery Cd's?
Would that even work?
Or is there something else I could try?

Would really love to help them get sorted with this issue, it is really weird..

1248368 2011-12-13 05:07:00 Are you booting from the cd's?? You could boot from the win7 cd then format the hdd. Then boot from the recovery cd's Speedy Gonzales (78)
1248369 2011-12-13 05:10:00 Thats what I was thinking, will that work ok do you think? Yes booting off the CD's turtle63 (9378)
1248370 2011-12-13 05:41:00 Should work. Or remove the hdd put it in a working system and format it Speedy Gonzales (78)
1248371 2011-12-13 07:56:00 I used the CD for Home Premium to delete the Partition and then format, I didn't do the System partition, do you think I should have? and maybe event eh Recovery Partition?
As it didn't work anyway, still comes up with error that the CD's are the wrong ones

1248372 2011-12-13 08:26:00 The DVD's that came from HP, as long as they are the correct ones will automatically make a new recovery partition, and any other partitions they have configured.

If when booting they say they are the wrong ones, then HP may have sent you the wrong ones -- Wouldn't be the first time thats happened.

Are any of the bar codes showing on the original COA -- many people think you have to have the 25 digit set, but there are two other codes on them, that MS can cross reference.

1248373 2011-12-13 08:56:00 Yes I am beginning to wonder whether the Cd's are the wrong ones, am going to ring them back tomorrow :(
The partitions are deleted and formatted and they still dont do it..

It is only after setup starts that it comes back saying This computer is not supported by the System Recovery Disc's etc etc etc

No there are not much of the Barcodes showing of the original COA, I sent a photo to Microsoft but he put me onto HP so might have to go back to him yet, sent him an email tonite so will see tomorrow, what a hassle!!! but their Laptop was compromised so nothing else could have been done.

1248374 2011-12-13 21:37:00 If you get the error the CD's are wrong, then either yes the CD's are wrong or it has had another system board at some point and not been "branded" (DMI stuff). Alex B (15479)

1248376 2011-12-13 23:43:00 Turns out HP had sent me the wrong CD's :( so now waiting on them again!!1
The neighbors said that they were getting rung every time they went online and the scammers were talking about their windows not being genuine so I dont know, they were compromised anyway.

They are terrible the Scammers, they seem to prey on older people a lot and they fall for it easily and they pay them the money, its quite sad really!!
