1248158 2011-12-11 10:07:00 I bought a Seagate 500GB External go flex drive. I removed the crappy backup software that came with it and its blank NTFS drive right now

I want to password protect its data. Whats a good software / utility out there that i can use?

I had posted this earlier and ppl mentioned to use TruCrypt. But with that you need to have Truecrypt installed on every PC
that you plug your hdd into to to access the files. And i believe you can have truecrypt to go on a usb drive to install wheneve you plug into another PC that does not have truecrypt but thats too much of a hassel. Unless theres some other way to do it ?

Is there some other software i can use ? I dont care if the content can be erasable/formatted , just that the data cannot be accessed without a password.

Cheers

1248159 2011-12-11 13:05:00 ok i just figured it out i guess. I will go with TrueCrypt. It is quiet powerful and versatile as i discovered

You can have the usb drive in portable mode with truecrypt executable files on it and use it on any PC.
And i will go with creating a volume based on a file hosted container so a single file on usb drive will contain encrypted data.

I would like to know though can a external USB hdd be partitioned in Windows ?
That would be neat, then i can have small partition to have truecrypt files and the second partition can be hidden until i mount it in Truecrypt.

If anyone has setup something in this manner please let me know

1248160 2011-12-11 17:58:00 Of course - you just treat it like an internal drive.........partition away.......... pctek (84)
1248161 2011-12-11 19:16:00 Yeah Windows can do that.

Was going to suggest Truecrypt, I've used it a *lot* and it's amazing!! :D

1248162 2011-12-12 04:05:00 :thanks chilling / pctek .

i couldnt create partion from diskmgmt and 4 some reason i thought i couldnt do it with external usb drive
but looks like i didnt know i had to delete the entire volume and then create 2 new volume to have 2 partitions .

I now have 400GB E drive showing up when I plug my usb hdd into PC and thats where i put family pics non sensitive stuff etc .

I have truecrypt exe file in this partition also that i just run then to show/mount the hidden/encrypted F drive that is 100GB is size

I use this encrypted 100GB drive/partition to store my bank finanacial statements etc that does not show up until you mount it from Truecrypt and

Just a note to someone who may try to setup something like this, use Win diskmgmt to leave the encrypted drive unassigned to a drive letter
other wise when you plug your hdd, both partitions will show up but windows will display a prompt for encrypted partition that its not accessible and if you like to format it .

With no drive letter assigned only the regular partition shows up as a drive and then When you mount the encrypted partition using the TrueCrpt exe file, thats when it will get assigned a drive letter and show up under Win explorer .

I am so excited to have this going and its a pretty neat setup most people i think might prefer,so i wrote this long novel instead of just saying thanks it worked :)

1248163 2011-12-12 08:41:00 Glad to hear. Don't forget to keep the portable Truecrypt files on the HDD so you can access the hidden partition from anywhere. Chilling_Silence (9)
