| 1247891 | 2011-12-09 21:43:00 | Hi all I have been trying to find a solution to this problem for 24 hours now and no luck. A friends PC has been playing up so I said I would take a look at it. He thought there was some problem with Ram or similar but it appears more like his kids have been installing all sorts of crap and there are software conflicts. In any case, I fired it up and have been going through uninstalling 3 of the 4 antivirus programs installed etc etc and then wanted to boot into safe mode. When doing that I get the "out of range" error message on the screen. There were no issues with the screen when booting up normally. I booted normally, reduced the screen resolution and booted back into safe mode and received the same error message. Back in normal boot I looked at the video drivers (separate PCI-e graphics card installed) and saw about three different drivers installed. I uninstalled one of the older drivers, rebooted and was presented with the "out of range" error in both normal and safe mode now. I removed the graphics card and booted again using on board graphics - same result - "out of range" in both normal and safe mode. I have since tried the following; 1) different monitor 2) reinstalling the graphics card and using that 3) removing the CMOS battery, waiting a while, replace and reboot (other than setting all the time settings etc still got the "out of range" error). So basically now I can't access the PC at all in any mode to finish the clean up. Any ideas? Thanks. |

| 1247893 | 2011-12-09 22:06:00 | Same thing happened when I was using the other PC here. Everytime, I uninstalled the ATI drivers, it said out of range, I had to connect the monitor that's connected now, to fix it / so I could see something But, if I uninstall the ATI drivers on this monitor (which is also a viewsonic its fine). But I'm not using ATI drivers on this now (after a reinstall - they kept crashing). I think (the other monitor here is stuffed, or going to die or something). When the viewsonic was connected (to the other PC), the screen went off (while the PC was on). I couldnt turn it back on. And it stopped the computer from booting.. It kept on beeping. Only way to stop it beeping - open the case, press on the videocard. (Its like its not making contact properly). Opening the case, and pressing on it seems to stop the beeping. And the computer will boot After changing the monitor, it boots fine. I think I'll change the videocards (to Nvidia), soon. Too many probs with ATI cards |

Since you have not mentioned what the OS is, exact directions could be a little tricky ;) But check and make sure its not set to high, change it back to a lower setting (60 Hertz ) or similar, see what happens. Since its been tried on two different monitors, which means its a setting on the PC, not the displays (generally) Once before ( long time ago, XP machine ) had a similar problem, from memory there was a damaged, odd registry key which stopped the PC loading in safe mode. |

Hi Wainui Yep - did the VGA mode thing but that only booted through into normal mode with the VGA resolution - I need to get into safe mode to run all the security programs to get rid of all the virus/spyware etc on this thing. It is Win 7 Home Premium 64 - will try reducing the frequency and get back with the results. |

Metla - the ass kicking will be the first recommendation - I'm surprised they haven't got one of them copyright infringement notices - it appears utorrent has been chugging away 24/7 and there is a massive directory full of pirated stuff. Maybe it will catch up with them soon! Kids - who'd have them? |

You dont need to get into safe mode -- What you can do is download and run Rkill (www.bleepingcomputer.com) There are several links together on that page, any one will do. You will get a DOS prompt window running, sometimes it appears to be doing nothing, leave it till the results appear, it will tell you whats been disabled, then you can carry on with the malware removal programs. What you may find, depending on what infections are there, several antimalware programs will need to be run -- it can be a all day job, to many peopel run quick scans and dont clean it correctly. I run the following, in the same order - Super Antispyware, Malwarebytes, Spybot, ( those will take 1-2 hours each depending on the PC spec's) then theres a couple of others as well for tough jobs, BUT if its that badly infected a complete reinstall is a better option. Make sure Ccleaner has been run first after Rkill, other wise the scanners need to scan countless temp junk files. |

Right - did the rkill thing as the monitor resolution was already set to 60Hz and couldn't go any lower so I've given up on the safe mode thing. Rkill didn't find any processes to stop so I guess that's a good thing. I had already turned off system restore and run Malwarebytes earlier. Ran Ccleaner - ran superantispyware (first couple of times it made the PC reboot just after starting the scan but the third time it got right through) and found 3 infections which I removed then rebooted. Tried running Malwarebytes but again it kept making the PC reboot not long after starting the scan. Could not get through a full scan. Tries running Spybot but had the same issue - PC restarting not long after starting the scan and couldn't get that done either. Got a MEMORY_MANAGEMENT blue screen on one occasion. Set Memtest86 running last night (2 x 2GB PC6400) and after about three hours it had shown numerous errors. Pulled one of the dimms out and ran it overnight with 1 x 2GB and returned heaps of errors. This morning (just over two hours ago) swapped the dimms and running memtest86 now as we speak and it has found one error so far on the other dimm. I guess there are not only numerous software related issues with the PC but hardware related ones as well. |
