| 1222130 | 2011-08-09 23:30:00 | Each country has 1 top job, the prime minister or president Each year the population grows So as each year progresses your chances of becoming president decreases. Its the same for profession sport, especially for playing for your country. Reason why I ask: I think big companies have this effect on the workforce aswell. |

| 1222131 | 2011-08-09 23:33:00 | The odds get higher the more people there are, so if 50 people want to be President then it is 50-1. Increase the population to 100 and it becomes 100-1 |

Well it's not the lottery. You have to have the relevant skills/experience whatever o apply in the first place. That eliminates mot of the population straight away. |

I think your argument in relation to companies may not be valid. I have worked for both large (200,000 plus employees) and small (12 employees). A large company will have many departments, hence many departmental heads, managers, section heads, foremen and so on. There is far more opportunity to "get on" in a large company than in a small one. It is also true one may encounter more people who have risen to positions of incompetence........The Peter Principal....:) en.wikipedia.org As for a large company subdividing like Telecom, the total number of workers will stay more or less the same , but there is now great scope for appointing more CEOs and directors....... :clap |

| 1222139 | 2011-08-11 02:27:00 | The odds get higher the more people there are, so if 50 people want to be President then it is 50-1 . Increase the population to 100 and it becomes 100-1 I don't think the statistics are that simple at all . Only a very small percentage of the population would wish to lead a country, so that is the baseline you have to start with, and except for wild-card entries by "personalities" fundamentally the contenders will come from the pool of established politicians . You can't run odds on a horse race based on how many horses there are in the country, not even all the racehorses . When the vast majority of the population are neither interested nor qualified, the odds should be calculated based on the number of candidates adjudged to have the will, the wit, and the wisdom to do the job . Then, of course, we can all rush of to the polls and vote some other prat in on the basis of the colour of the rosette he or she wears, so go figure . It would be great if we could elect the PM ourselves instead of letting a load of sycophants push somebody forward on the end of a sharp stick in the hope they'll get a cushy number out of it .
