1221885 2011-08-09 02:57:00 Anybody here familiar with comparative shipping costs?

I need to ship a 140Kg pallet-mounted machine, door-to-door from Auckland to Melbourne, and this typically costs about $500 for a 1200mm x 900mm footprint.

I usually ship for repair or reconditioning, so airfreight has been used for previous shipments to speed the turn-around, but this will be a one-way trip so delivery time is not an issue.

I've been web- searching for sea-freight but can't find anything that would give me a comparative cost indication for the same door to door service.

Is there any typical cost ratio between the two shipping methods that might give me an idea of the sea freight cost for an equivalent service?

Cheers

1221886 2011-08-09 06:07:00 Before sending anything by ship over that $$$ piece of water, check on useful insurance costs - I didn't, and repented at leisure. Standard sea freight does not include too much cover for the events that occur with startling regularity. R2x1 (4628)
1221887 2011-08-09 12:23:00 Seafreight is only cheaper than airfreight for relatively large shipments, that is because there are a plethora of minimum additional charges incurred that are added on for a vast variety of services, that actually frequently exceed the freight component of the costs, especially for smaller shipments

Billy when I researched the importation of a cistern for you. I recommended a long standing friend of mine, as someone who could get you a highly competitive deal.

1 shipping tonne is a cubic metre, you will be charged the greater of the physical weight or cubic measure - if the weight exceeds the measure then at 140 Kg is cheaper by airfreight. Minimum seafreight measure used to be reckoned at 1/3 tonne weight or measure.

If you still have a record of the e-mail I sent you, give Trevor a call, he will give you sound advice, if you have lost it let me know and I will resend the contact details.

1221889 2011-08-10 05:17:00 Well.........

I've done some more research and it sounds like sea-freight is inclined to pick up a lot of miscellaneous charges (not encountered with airfreight) when leaving NZ and arriving in Oz, in addition to the freight itself , especially for one-way trips, and these may not be quantified in any quote.

The value of the item itself is not high in its current state, but I think it might be safer to stick to airfreight, that way the quote is the quote, and no surprises.
